The fact they were imprisoned had nothing to do with it. He was openly opposed to her taking medication. And he took quinine, which is a drug. His surgery was for appendicitis, and if malaria was hitting him hard enough that his life was in danger without surgery, you really believe he survived without any kind of treatment? Come on.
I'm also suspicious of the idea that he really had his appendix removed without painkillers and without showing any signs of pain. Though I have no proof on that one.

But thank you for reminding me of another point. Why was he released from prison? Due to a fear of a riot. Though Ghandi spread messages of peace, they only worked because they knew if they fucked up that his followers wouldn't be so peaceful.

Peaceful resistance is not what the Jews needed. And challenging the Germans to kill them wasn't defense. Sorry. Since just being Jewish was basically a crime, they were all being civilly disobedient just being being Jewish. It didn't save them.

He said that if germans "choose to occupy your homes, you will vacate them. If they do not give you free passage out, you will allow yourself, man, woman, and child, to be slaughtered, but you will refuse to owe allegiance to them." I'm sorry, but I refuse to condone an ideology that states you should allow children to be slaughtered, even if invasion is inevitable.

Jesus is overrated as a guy for sure, but he wasn't sleazy and manipulative like Columbus, or representative of political menopause and brady bunch ideology like Reagan (and his Just Say No wife). Where are all the athletes who just throw balls around, or the mindless pop stars who lip sync words and get paid millions and receive uncontrollable public worship for something that gives nothing but restless, programming distractions back to the public??

I agree with all of your post except this. Anyone who thinks this is all that's involved hasn't looked into it much at all. There are some who like football for pretty dumb reasons, but it's a profoundly sophisticated science, from which many lessons for life can be extracted. Don't let the idiots who yell at the big plays ruin your perception of the sport; it's unlike anything else. I used to hate football too.

Again, yes there are many overrated people today, probably more so than ever. This thread was specifically about historical figures. I'd be the first one to vote on a poll with current overrated people, I just didn't want to take the time to compile one, since there are so many good candidates to choose from :)

I agree that all of humanity is overrated. We naturally think that we're the ultimate presence on the earth and ultimately in the universe. If we didn't think so much of ourselves we wouldn't have so many problems.

says me too, and 58 others..hence why he leads the poll by a considerable margin.

jesus wasn't cool, his own people despised him.

Precisely. I also marked Ronald Regan, as I greatly dislike the drug war.

I think it's pretty proven that Jesus did exist. He's not "fictional". Maybe he didn't do all the great things he was said to have done, but still, you can't deny that he had a nice philosophy. I mean, I'm not huge Jesus freak, and I wouldn't choose Jesus as, you know, most underrated historical figure or anything, but... that is how I feel.

Uh, how do you know? Did you met him?

I actually think Jesus is the most overrated person in history as well, not because he wasn't cool or anything (we don't know how he really was, though what we learn about him sounds like he's pretty cool to me  ). But just because he has made a huge impact on western culture because we saw him as the son of God and he merely was one of many prophets. Historically Jesus just really is overrated.

John Lennon is overrated as well. How many people just worship that guy like he invented peace himself. If I wouldn't see this kind of human foolishness everyday I'd be annoyed over it.

Reagan. Man was a stupid, glorified dick. And I hate to be a geek, but it's van Beethoven, not von Beethoven.

Oh and could people please elaborate on why they think Jesus was/is overrated? I'm not Christian, but it seems that saying Jesus is overrated is an attempt at saying "I'm too cool for religion". Maybe it's just me, but it comes across that way.

The man Jesus is overrated because he wasn't God or the son of God to most objective people. The belief of the people in Jesus the son of God has shaped our entire culture. Since he most likely wasn't (the son of) God I'd say he did get more attention then he should have had, thus overrated.

I have to agree with you. He was a thief who hung his own sailor from the yardarm for insubordination. He was directly responsible for genocide (mass murder) of the Arawak people of Hispaniola and he was arrested and imprisoned for gross mismanagement in 1500. His men sought gold and discovered syphilis, and returned it to Europe, a case of poetic justice if there ever was one. His Spanish fellow travellers such as Pizarro put to the sword the peoples of the West Indies, Mexico, Panama and Peru.

It is amazing that his name is all over the map and that he has a country, a Canadian province, and numerous cities and towns named after him. I don't see any towns named after Hitler, Milosevich or Pol Pot.

Additionally, other Europeans such as the Vikings visited North America long before Columbus. In the case of the Vikings, they were as heavy handed as Columbus, but they paid for this with their lives when natives wiped out their Newfoundland settlements.

As for Dwight Eisenhower, lots of people are probably not aware that he signed the death warrant to execute U.S. Army Private Edward Slovik by firing squad.
Slovik, a draftee, was executed in January 1945 in France for refusing combat duty. He took eleven bullets in the upper body. None of them struck his heart, and death was slow and agonizing. The commander of the firing squad almost had to re-form the squad and deliver another round because Slovik died so slowly.

He leads this poll because a lot of people are jaded. That's their choice, but if you call Jesus uncool, at least declare that's your opinion, instead of arrogantly saying it like it's a fact.

And Jesus was despised because he was a rebel. I guess you people count yourselves among the establishment then?!
