Texas is a drag, especially if you're a liberal, pothead, musician or all of the above; that's why I am moving to Berkeley, California to hopefully connect with some hip folk, form a music group and have some serious good times. What I've heard so far is good, hipper than Frisco, tons of pot, mhmm. Just about anywhere in California would seem like the promised land compared to Texas though...

Anyway I'm turning 17 this May and find no further reason to stay at home. By then I will have enough money for the Greyhound bus ticket... yes, I'm leaving with nothing but my guitar and a small bag of basic supplies. Honestly, what are my chances of surviving? Do cops hassle you if you sleep in the parks? Any information on the place, things to do, where to work, meet people, play, etc. would be extremely helpful, and any information on how to survive would definitely be helpful.

And any young, aware people who want to either go with me or jam when I get there I'm totally down for that.

My advice would be to find out where musicians hang and try and connect with someone that way.Be carefull. If you don't find Berkely satisfactory, try Santa Cruz. It's just down the road with redwoods and ocean

I think you're pretty crazy, but it's a true quality for a musician. :) Good luck!!

I was thinking of going to berk to study music, i got the cash... but i can learn myself. If i travel anywhere i need a guitar, or at least a harmonica.

Right On, WoodstockChild! Berkeley will welcome you. The CA weather is great. If you find, which you might, that it is just too expensive to make it, thumb your way north to Eugene, OR. It's colder, but a great vibe. We love heading south about 50 minutes for the going's on, live music, Saturday Market's, etc.
Kudos for having it in you to go. All the best. You do great!

We love the CA coast. Humboldt County, Big Trees, very nice ....

I'm looking forward to it all.

I've decided I'll probably head out in June or July.
