So I know there's a couple of older threads that discuss "necessary" festival gear. But here's my question, I'm in the need for a new tent to be used for light camping trips and festies. Usually there'll be just 2 of us in sleeping in the tent. Is there any justification for a 3 man tent? or should I just stick with a tiny 2man backpacking tent?
The 3 man tent could be nice, as it would give you more room to store your stuff...but if room isn't an issue then I would say just stick with the two man tent.
From my experience, I would never use a 2 person tent unless I was by myself. Festival season is usually hot. I don't want to be right up against whomever I am camping with and sweating bullets. Some festivals there is no parking your car at your campsit...thus you have to keep all your stuff in your tent. I mean, it's nice to have a smaller tent when the space is limited but it's not all, well, comfortable.
does anybody have any recommendations on cheap tents? Im not looking for a high quality thing. Mostly just for festivals an being in peoples yards.
I have a 2 man tent and I usually share it with 3 other people, and we're never even crammed. Its kinda like a hotel room sometimes, they advertise as a room for 2 people, but the 2 beds they have are double beds (which can hold 2 people each) and most i've stayed at has a little fold out couch that another person can sleep in. I guess they just assume that everyone likes a ton of room or something. And if you get your tent in the off seasons, its usually cheaper. I got my tent that was originaly $50 for $20 in febuary last year at Bass Pro Shop.
ah well, if you're only going place where you can get there, and get it there, with some kind of a vehicule, then and only then, the bigger tent and shairing it makes sense. most of the places i prefer to go, you have to walk, and for that i don't bother with the weight and bulk of a tent as such at all, although something really light and small would be ok. but if you have to haul everything on your back because your headed into roadless back country, then a simple big sheet of something waterproof to make a minishelter over your sleeping bag that goes under it for a ground cover and then back out one side and over the top for a rain shelter and can also wrap arround things to keep them dry on your back does the job. but for car 'camping', festivals, revels, what have you, then your not really restricted and can bring the kitchen sink if you've got some kind of something to bring it in. heck i'd make and bring some kind of geodesic fraime made out of pvc pipe from the hardware store and big fibre reinforced synthetic tarps to skin it with, you know that all comes appart and goes back togather again by the numbers so it can all easily fit in whatever kind of vehicule you have. when my dad i used to go road trip exploring every week end, all the back roads we could find and free places nobody objected to our stopping or was around to do so, we always had a whole kit of everything anyone would need to survive for a week. enough for ourselves and a whole car full of whoever flagged us down hitchin. gallons of drinking water, nibbling suppllies and stuff to cook when we stopped somewhere. usually just stuff we could replenish from whatever store we found to stop at along the way. =^^= .../\...
