Can someone explain to me why organic food is always more expensive? I think there was a thread on this before but i couldnt find it. Thanks
I think it's because they require more care since they don;t have pesticides and so not as many people want to do the extra work to grow them because it is less efficient.
Organic food is more exspensive because its more labor intense, more likely to fail due to disease, there are more regulations/paper work for organic farmers, its a specialty item(no bulk savings). The real reason though is because people will pay more. The people who seek out organic foods are more interested in their health and more willing to pay for more healthful things. Peace
Organic food is more expensive because: A- it yields less because the veggies aren't all pumped up on veggie steroids & pesticides and because you get more li'l critters chowin' down on them. You need to plant more to get more. B- because although a lot of people eat organic most people don't so the farms for them are usaully smaller and most are privately owned. The owner needs to charge more because of less production, however if more people ate organic the demand for organic food would increase thus bringin down the cost. I eat organic as often as I can. It tastes better, it's better for you, and I like supporting the smaller farms.
I hate big farms as much as the next guy, but the real reason organic food costs more is because crazy hippies like yourselves pay for the crap you buy in stores. If you really want to stick it to the man or what have you, go to a real farm stand, not some supermarket geared to people with more money than brains. (please disrguard this all you crazy hippies who actually go to farm stands, rock on)
NAMASTE As far as prices high is that were most organic food comes from is shiped.I have a farm and yes there is alittle more work but not much more than if i was not growing organic.I supply three food coops and my prices are lower than vegis grown with chems.Prices are high on anything that there is only a small supply off that is not near by.Prices i have seen are lower in an area when there are more organic farms. When theres few the prices go higher. One thing i do on all my orders is that who ever i sell to wholesale must not go more than 10% higher than what i sell my organic produce for. As time goes on and more and more organic farms on all sizes are poping up the prices will get lower. In Love and Light Pritam
The gentleman from Maine, as usual, hit the nail square on it's head. One of the biggest, perhaps THE biggest, reason for high prices = middle men (or middle women). From my experience, on my farm here in Alabama, the way to get the best prices, quality and selection is to buy direct from the organic farmer. We're not real hard to find. Start at your local farmer's markets, ask around, check with county agents and/or coops, or just Google it. I became a dedicated organic gardener and farmer while helping my Grandfather in his garden, in about 1958. In the years since, I've meet many others and without exception they have been friendly and glad to know the folks eating their produce. That's because they're proud of what they're doing. As to the more work issue, I'm not sure. My little farm is in a very agriculture county, and I watch and hear the work the non-organic types put in. They put in a lot of work and much money, then get less for what they produce. Go figure!
Okay....I know there aren't any meateaters here, but I'll say it anyways: the reason organic/biodynamic meat and milk cost more is because animals there aren't fed hormones, and for vegetables and fruits...ditto above posts!
