Here's the deal. With dreadlocks, the whole world is going to view you differently. A lot of people will quickly form opinions about you that may or may not be true. In the interview environment, the employer will typically have his mind made up about you, based on appearance alone, in the first thirty SECONDS (with or without dreadlocks.) Your job is to be OVER prepared for the interview. You have to really wow the employer and get him to change his mind. Is there any place in particular that you're thinking of applying? Post that and I'll be happy to lend some steps that (while i obviously cant garauntee you'll get the job) Will put you on their radar for a very hireable candidate.
I already had a job when I got mine, but no one really seems to mind. I do wear my hair up at work though, and with normal bangs, sometimes it's hard to even tell I have dreads. There's lots of professional looking ways you can cover them up if you're really worried, but I think it's more about how you present yourself overall, and whether or not you're well prepared and all that. Really depends what type of job you're going for too.
I have a job now which is soon to end as a cleaner, and i will have a none-dreaded full fringe and baaaangs so it should hopefully have a similar effect to yours spork a ...shop job i guess, i'm 17 and so not moving into any particular career..although i suppose some people may be at my age, haha. i'm sure i can find at least one shop that will hire me.. i think i am fairly hire-able..hopefully, haha thanks very much please check out the other thread i posted about dr bronner's soap :| thanks!
not to make this a racist issue at all, but my friend had trouble getting a job at Target because of her locks, and yet there were african-americans with dreadlocks working there. for some reason, it seems being white with locks puts you into another class altogether. i suppose she could have argued the issue, but that would have put her in an even more bad light with the HR person, so she left it alone. she wound up managing a well-known health food store, so it turned out better for her.
i've been wondering the same thing since i recently quit my job at Goodwill where they let me wear a hat... i'm wondering how hard it's going to be getting my next job with my 4 month old dreadies... i'm kind of worried i'll have to cut my hair just to find a job. not working isn't an option so we shall soon find out. :|
I got hired at a temp agency after I got my dreads. They don't really care what you look like at all. I'm gonna be applying for jobs again because I need better health insurance, but my dreads are young, not even 4 months yet, so if I tie them back they look totally presentable, especially if I throw one of those thick head bands on over them. How old are your dreads? You could try that.
ive had a job in an office type setting even in the it field niut personaly i'm alergic to bosses i like to work for myself or not work lifes too shgort to waste 1/2 of every single day working for someone else
I agree 100%, which is why I want to be a farmer. But for now I have to save up enough money to pay off my debt to my parents, pay for my ridiculous health insurance because of my diabetes, and save up enough to (help) buy a farm! It's a dream, but it's gonna happen.
You can get a well-paying, professional job with dreads (even natural/neglect dreads). Qualifications, personality, and overall appearance (i.e. looking clean and professional) matter most. Is it difficult? Sure can be... especially because you may feel more self-conscious with dreads and that could be sensed in the interview. But it's not impossible.
i sent out my cv yesterday and today have been invited to 3 interviews next week. they obviously liked my cv/qualifications etc. we'll see what they say when they see me! i'll dress smart, have a shave a wear my hair tied back. i should look fine. tbh if they don't employ me because of my hair, i don't want to work for them anyways. someone i know who runs a company says that he would rather employ someone with dreads, it shows they are creative, disiplined people who are individual and are brave enough to go against critism to look how they want. better than employing another average joe. i do live in devon, uk though and people round here don't wear suits and the like. totnes in devon is dreadlock central!! i reckon at least half the people are proper hippies! whatever a proper hippy is! i'm an architect by the way so meet client, planners, councils etc so my appearance is important. i'll let you know how it goes.....
just thought i'd update this. they loved me. offered me job straight away with an enourmous wage!! so NO dreads do not stop you getting good jobs. he even commented how smart and presentale i was!
had another interview today and they offered me a job too and beat the pay of the other. there both realy great companies so i'm gonna put them in a bidding war. i feel so wanted!!
