Ever since I was 13, I've wanted dreads. My mom, of course wouldn't let me have them. I'm 20 now. A few issues: 1) I work at Chipotle(the gourmet burrito place) and they're really laid back,I mean we can have tats and as many piercings as our bodies can possibly hold, but I'm worried that they'll think I'm unsanitary or something. (I shower everyday though folks, sometimes twice a daily). Has anyone else ever had an issue with outsiders viewing you as "unclean"?? 2) I'm a really creative person and I'm really into art and poetry and things like that...BUT...I'm not really a "hippie" persay. I mean I'm probably the most peaceful person you'll ever meet, but I'm not really into drugs and smoking pot and stuff.(been there, done that, over it.) And most of my clothes come from Old Navy and American Eagle. I'm not stuck up or fake though. I just love mixing the prep look with some funky pieces and making it my own, ya know?In your opinion, would that make me a poser? Are there unwritten rules as to who is worthy of wearing dreads and who isn't? 3) I'm guessing there not really reversable, right? I mean, I would have to get them cut off, if I ever changed my mind, wouldn't I? Is there anyway to class/corporate them up, if I would need to? Any opinions/personal stories would be super-helpful and much appreciated!!!
ive known computer network admins and colledge professors with dreads but what u may find is, dreads change u you alresdy seem pretty hippy inside and when u dread u may find they change you enough that corporate persuites are the last thing on your mind they are not reversable thats true but dreads can be kept pressentasble in any environment id suggest trying toi keep them thinner, rather then thick, tie em back or something can u wear a tam at work? dreads are not style dependant they are not a hair style but a way of life ive seen cops with dreads (in uniform not undercover) ive seen wow this woman, musta been in her 70's looked like she just came off an iowa farm and right out of a norman rockwell painting, untill she turned around and u saw 1 massive massive dread folded neatly in this kinda sling thing she had over her shoulders to carry it if you want to dread then dread, its something you feel ytou have to do but as threy mature, they tend to become like antenas into a spiritual world..roots that connect you to the earth and way more then just a look
1. If you appear clean, and have always been, they shouldn't have any reason to think you aren't now. Shouldn't matter what people think anyways! Or you can just wear them up at work.. or with a headband or tam or something. But no, no one has ever said I was unclean.. at least not to my face, lol. 2. I'm kind of the same.. I don't really look like a hippie otherwise. But dreads aren't about being a hippie.. lots of people from lots of different walks of life have them. If they mean something to you, then go for it. 3. You can comb dreads out. It takes a while, but it can be done. So it's not like you have to shave your head or anything. And yeah, you can class them up with head scarves, funky headbands, etc. Even use aloe to make them less frizzy, so you don't need to touch wax that way.
spork, i wouldnt say you can judt comb them out u can if theyre really not very mature if they asre really mature u might be able to, with extreme effort and alot of hair loss peaceitout has been combing hers out to get rid of a wax mistake now for a couple weeks and hasnt finnished yet after a couple years combing them out would be extremly hard
even if they are not mature and you want to comb them out, it's a pain in the butt...i'm doing it right now actually. (i used tons of wax, so i'm starting over). Don't worry about being in this group or that group...just go with what you want to do. Don't even classify yourself as anything (whether its a hippy or a goth), just be yourself. And a big FYI, not all "hippys" do drugs. It's not a necessary thing.
absolutely right i have a freind, dubside when my dreads were barely to my shoulders he was already tucking his in his socks..never would touch weed or anything, noit coffee not asperin dreads should never be associated with drugs just cause somne dreads smoke sacred herbs doesnt mean most do at all
I know not all people with dreads do drugs and I know that not all hippies are involved in that stuff. I was just curious about how other ppl in the world might view me with dreads. now that I know I won't be considered a poser, I'm deff going for it. I'm actually pretty excited. but kind of nervous at the same time. ????????would you suggest just doing one small dread where i could hide it just to be sure it's what i want? is it easy to just make one lock??????
mate dont get wrapped up in labels like "hippy" and "poser". When I walk down the street with my messy dreads and camo coat, I'm pretty sure people must think I'm some kind of greenpeace eco-warrior activist...but I'm not. But I think its quite funny to give off that impression and let people think theyve got me "worked out". One thing is for sure, you will stand out like hell. Be sure you can deal with that. And be prepared to be asked lots of silly questions about them.
You're right soaringeagle, it's probably really difficult to comb them out! I don't actually have any personal experience with that, nor do I plan to!! I've just heard of people that have combed out dreads successfully.. And dubside? As in the guy with the awesome inflatable kayak?
i can deff deal with standing out and silly questions, but i talked to my bf today and he thinks i won't look good with them... sigh. what do you guys think? i have pics in my gallery...
ha ha! my bloke said i wouldnt look good with dreads and he didnt want me to dread up, but you know what? i didnt do it for him, or anyone else, i did it for me, and guess what? he's still here with me if he was with me just cos of how i look then i would have given him the boot long ago, even though i love him to bits. yep you can do it one dread at a time, it took me nearly 3 month to finish doing mine, and they looked like shite for a little while. but i love them now! even my sister who is super conservative and almost begged me not to do it agrees they look fab and really suit me, more than any style i have had before. which is good cos i dont ever plan on cutting them
oh, good, I don't have to say: you are 20, an adult. follow your heart. Do make SURE it'll fly at your job, or be prepared to find another. Arm yourself with knowledge.
as I say all the time, I have yet to see a single person that doesnt look good with dreads... they look awesome on everyone
lolk pretty sure its a different dubside thqat 1 looks like hes from greeenland the dubside i meant is from philly was in a band called out of africa cant find a picture of him
