My cold weather athsma has now followed me into the warm air and it is worse. the campus doctor has decided to put me on advair cause it has steroids since my albuterol is working only short term. I was curious is there anything else I can do without convential medicines? I am already on alot of other stuff.
without knowing your medical history this is all just "stuff to ask/research/think about" but there are diets to control asthma that eliminate allergenic or mucous causing foods, keeping the home allergen free (as allergies make asthma worse), exercise (that makes it worse at first but pays off in a few months) to increase lung capacity. the idea would be to wean off daily maintenance and only need the emergency inhaler. does Advair work for you? If so, it might be worth looking into exactly WHY steroids fix it.
I am not sure about non-conventional asthma meds, but if you get on the right dose of Advair, you shouldn't need other meds, except a quick acting bronchodilator like albuterol to have on hand just in case of emergencies. Advair contains a corticosteroid (reduces inflammation) and a long acting bronchodilator (like Albuterol but takes longer to act and lasts longer). As far as Advair and 'steroids' go, corticosteroids occur naturally in the body, so they're not the bad type of steroids like body-builders use - they're totally different.
There's some dietary things which can aggravate asthma: salt, wheat, dairy products, white potatoes are some that I have noticed. If you can cut these out you might notice a big difference. You also have to stay away from dust and smoke of all kinds. Moving to a dry climate like Arizona helps a lot of people.
My boyfriend is on advair and it seems to work for him alright, he still gets attacks once in a while but I think that can't be helped.
would you check out my Advair thread and help me on it... Im curious... I dont think the medication is reaching the lung tissue... I dont have astma, but I do smoke. but I also run alot and take scuba classes to kill time. your input would be helpfull.. thanks... http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=297670
