As Bertrand Russell summarized the Christian message: "Love your enemies, because you'll make them so damn mad!"
i love all of you, id say this post is about done but im sure someone will post something after me anyway. i believe i quoted Grissom before but i remember on CSI when he was talking to the priest and he told the priest that he didnt believe in religion b/c of all the bad things it did. thought that was a cool point of view. (btw, im not an atheist but i dont have a name for my religion either, its not really a religion at all actually, just all of my beliefs)
but why does everyone love the bible so much? jesus didnt write it and neither did God, wasnt the earliest scripture in the bible written 40 years after jesus died anyway? i say, live what you believe is a virtuous and meaningful life helping all that you can and when you die youll pretty much be good to go no matter what God is like. (unless satan is God and weve got it completely backwards, you never know)
I assume you're talking about the New Testament. The Old Testament, of course, goes back hundreds of years before Jesus. The earliest scriptures in the New Testament, writings of St. Paul, were written about 50 A.D., probably about 14 to 24 years after Jesus died. The earliest Gospel, believed to be Mark, was written about 65 to 70 A.D., about 29-39 years after Jesus. Christians revere the New Testament because it gives us an idea of what first and second century Christians thought about Jesus and what it is to be a Christian. I don't think either God nor Jesus "wrote" the Bible, but I think the Book is an inspired work by Jesus' followers. Some Christians would dispute your contention that you'll be "good to go" just by living what you think is a virtuous and meaningful life, but I live my life on that assumption. If you're doing that, you're ahead of most of us, in my opinion.
good to know and thank you but still, they are not jesus so you really cant rely on the bible to be an accurate record. people tend to also stretch the truth (im not denying what he did, im just saying...) i saw a show about how memory decays over even a short amount of time, i.e. on sci fi they had some people go into an area in broad daylight with cameras on there heads and remember what they saw and they faked a ufo crash or something and they interviewed the people a month later and one guy said he saw something that wasnt even there, it wasnt on camera and the guys in charge didnt put it there but he said he remembered stuff that didnt happen even a month after it happened. im still not saying the bible is a bunch of lies but its definetly not a completely accurate record either.
History books were not written by those involved but still hold the most accurate account of what happened during that time.
To be fair, Native Americans do not have anything written down, but they relied on a strong oral tradition to keep their religion alive. Same goes for hindus and the Vedas that were not written down for a very long time, yet went uncorrupted. I do agree that stories about Jesus could possibly have gotten exagerated, but it isn't always a simple case of "telephone tag"
Sandal-man, your veiws are very deep for somone of your age I would love to read this whole thread, but there are a few to many posts. But to answer your question im sure alot of good has come from Christianity over the years, good stems from all things. In saying that, I think there is a great likely-hood the message Jesus gave has been very distorted over the years, because the mind does that. It weighs things up, measures them, and basically judges them into something entirely different because it doesn't realise the original concept. how do i know? i fell into the same trap with my own thoughts in relation to similar things. But then again these are just that-thoughts, so i've given up arguing my points and denying religion with no actual knowledege.
Sandle-man, My belief system is based on the Old and New testament as taught to me by my christian Grandmothers. They knew I needed that in my life or I was sure to grow up as a wild child. They taught me to turn the other cheek, and that kept more than a few people from having a can of whoop ass opened and poured over them. They taught me forgiveness and that keeps me from hunting down people who call my christian Grandmothers bad names. They taught me to be charitable, I may not be rich by any ones standards but I don't regret giving away what I had. They taught me to love, even you, all of this came from religion, faith, and the teachings of Jesus Christ. It has made me a better person and believe me when I say you should be glad I am. Love & peace brother, in His name.
