As is everything else on any floor, on the ground, and on practically every surface on the earth. We live with bacteria everywhere constantly and continuously. Not all bacteria are "bad," and many are harmless or even necessary for our survival. As to any bacteria that could potentially harm us, our skin as well as the body's natural immunity system are there to protect us - and usually do an excellent job - otherwise the human race would never have survived to this point. There are potentially much more harmful bacteria on surfaces that our hands touch than on any floor, so worrying about bacteria that our bare feet might potentially come in contact with as being any greater threat than any other bacteria on any other surface that we might touch with other parts of our body just isn't logical.

I think I will try the Lowes and Home Depot thing tonight. Just to check how often they clean their floors, which is most likely never! Will let you know how it goes and maybe take some pics!

Experience has shown me that within chains individual stores can vary widely. One store's floors will be clean as a whistle while the next will be quite dirty. Day of the week and time of day can even cause a variance in the same store. I don't think you can ever say what store's floors will be clean or dirty with any degree of certainty.

I have actually never found any pariticular store to have very dirty floors - at least, no dirtier than the sidewalk outside.

Well it's not really about dirtiness but anyway, once I used to spend time in a pub owned by a chick i was involved with and each visit ended up with me leaving with cherry red soles. the floor was a red bricks fabric, maybe it was some dye but dont'know for sure , the whore eventually bankrupted, stole my money and disappeared so I cant ask her any more about her god damned floor.

I work in a grocery store and I think our floors are pretty clean. Our floor guy does an excellent job. I'm sure bare feet would still get dirty on them, but not filthy. I walk in my socks at work sometimes and they get dirty, but not terribly so.

I am always amazed at how dirty the bottoms of my feet get after a half hour of food shopping. Way dirtier than they usually get after walkin round the 'hood. I was gonna complain to the manager about the dirt level, but then I wouldn't get dirty soles, would I?

Well...I decided to walk barefoot to a local gay bar, it was downtown. So I had to avoid, spit and glass and who knows what else!

Hmm, is it due to that Christian Easter spirit of resurrection thing that made this old thread come back to life...?

    :D

    just kidding.

It's one of the mysteries of barefoot life how floors that look clean (such as the tile floors in grocery stores, malls and subway stations) can get bare soles as dirty as they get... at least in the urban area I live in. After commuting on the subway, going to a mall and do grocery shopping there, my bare soles are soot black from the fine dust that clings to them.

The floor themselves don't look dirty at all - they equally stain my soles. Therefore, I couldn't name any particular store being best to blacken bare soles. They all do the trick.

Wiggling bare and sometimes black-bottomed toes,

Not exactly inside a restaurant, but in the parking lot of a McDonalds there were oil spots on top of dirt. Stepping in those gave me pitch black soles! Stayed that way even after daily showers. The best places for filthy soles are stadium floors (Grateful Dead shows were the best), parking garages and many barefoot sidewalk chalk artists have the filthiest feet/legs! Check out my images of them on Webshots http://community.webshots.com/user/barefootguy

I have also noticed most grocery store floors are filthy. Seems worst in the veggie fruit sections but i think they are the "stickiest". Of course subway trains and stations probably win the filthy prize if there is such a thing.

So for the past few days I've again taken up walking excercising in a large local mall like i did last year. The place apparently has a massive amount of foot traffic (no pun intended) and my soles are permanently blackened. Never knew window shopping could be so much fun!
