I was just wondering if anyone here ever gets rude comments on your food by family and/or friends, and if so, how do you deal with them? For example, today I was talking to my friend online, and the subject of what I was eating came up. Well, I was eating stuffed shells (they were stuffed with spinach and tofu). He asked me, "stuffed with what?" (he knows I am a veggie), so I responded, and he replied with, "yuck." I really didn't understand what was so gross by my description, so I replied in turn with, "at least I don't eat dead animal corpses." I usually just let it slide when people do this, but sometimes it really irritates me. I make it a habit not to insult other people's food, and I guess I expect the same respect. This tends to happen a lot between my family and I. I realize they have their own personal tastes, but I still find it rude. Does this ever annoy any of you, as well?
My friends insult my food all the time, there's a long running "I'm not eating it if it's vegan" thing that goes on. I know they're just being stupid but yeah, sometimes it pisses me off. I just give them a warning look and they shut up. I also have 2 vegan friends to back me up. Don't have a problem with my family as I hardly ever eat with them.
Words is only words at least , I get harassed about it weekly. Haven't had anything thrown at me for a while. It's best to just laugh it off really though, if you laugh at yourself it makes it pretty hard for people to take the piss. If they ask you, just say 'grass and leaves' or something to that extent.
Every day at work I get people hovering over my food to ask what it is and when I tell them they say, "ewwwwwww, I don't know how you eat that."
I always love it when people say "oh that looks good what is it" and you say its tofu or something and they are like "yuck never mind" that always makes me laugh bc people are missing out on so much.
I ignore rude comments. I look good, I feel good, and that's all that matters to me. People can say what they want...I shrug it off...bigger fish to fry in this world, I suppose... (errr, not literally... )
Just smash up a little canned sausage and slip it in their food when they are cooking and then tell them they just ate pig genitals.
I often cook Sunday lunches for the whole family, inlaws included. I have to do them a chicken as they're omni. My motherinlaw always tries to get me to eat the damn chicken and it pisses me off! Can't stand the stuff, although I love hens, am getting some soon... the live kind though! When I go to their house for Sunday lunch they never even make an effort to accomodate my diet which I think is rude considering I bend my ethics to accomodate theres at my home. Cx
I've had some cracking arguments at school about my vegetarianism, people just don't understand my aversion to eating once-living animals... At home I tend to get 'can't you take the meat out of it' if we've got something like chinese or 'it won't kill you to eat meat'. I'm lucky because i converted my Mum to flexitarianism (not that I implement it, but her choice...) so we eat the same stuff now.
Got told I was picky and going too far because I refused to eat a chocolate mousse that I used to eat all the time. What part of gelatine is dead animal as well do my parents not understand??
I was on an organic diet, and when it came time to quit breastfeeding (my daughter was a year old and I couldn't stand people freaking out on me anymore) I bought Horizon Organic breastmilk, and it was twice the price. People flipped out on me for it. They also brought up "oh you're crazy you spend way too much money on food blablablbalbla" so I asked them why they eat as much as I do and weigh 100 pounds more than me and had health issues. They shut up after that.
I suppose some people enjoy making fun at people who are different from them. If you go to a conference in another city, you are asked about your diet, whether you're vegetarian or not. I saw that option on a form I had to complete. It depends on the people and the way they think or respect other people's choices.
I let the comments slide. I actually think it's kinda funny. "OMMMGGZZers, how do you eat that?" Easy, I open my mouth, put my delicious vegan food in it and chew then swallow. It ain't quantum physics. They're just jealous because I can make slabs of that weird off white food taste a-a-m-m-a-a-z-z-ing! They're also envious of my eggless pancake making skills.
I feel sorry for them because they are so ignorant. It really does hurt my feelings though when people simply can't respect what another person chooses to put or not put into their own body. I have never preached, nor will I ever to anyone about this. I just tell them it is what I have chosen to do for me. It is unfortunate that I have to take all of my own food with me though to my in-laws house because they will purposely try to put meat into my food and trick me into eating it so they can laugh at me and "prove some sort of ridiculous point".
I'm not a vegetarian, so I think speaking from my side, it's more a matter of guilt and jealousy that our way of life isn't strictly "cruelty-free." You might say this problem is easily remedied by us just turning veggie and vegan ourselves and all would be well. That would be fine if we all agreed on the most basic principles of what your lifestyle is based on, but sadly, some of us don't. That said, I would never make fun of someone for the way they eat. I lived vegan (out of respect for some vegans I was living with) for a month and learned a lot about how people arrive at their beliefs, nutrition, etc, and while I disagree on some points, I completely respect and support anyone who chooses this lifestyle. If anything, I admire it, rather than ridicule it. I won't go into my own beliefs, but suffice it to say that I would never attack someone for deciding they want to devote their lives to decreasing pain in the world... and those people that hear the word "vegan" and go running for the hills don't know what they're missing. Some of my favorite meals are vegan, and they're good for you too!
Been veg for ten years and get lots of stupid comments. I became diabetic and then went totally Vegan and it pretty much cured that. But after I became Vegan I started telling the frustrated veggies(ie meat beaters) that I ate this way due to my medical condition, and that made it all ok all of sudden. I guess it's better to eat meatless because of a medical condition than compassion. Scary what that says for our society. my kids get it at school and I told them to ask the offender what the food they disliked most was, and then explain to them that choosing to not eat say, patato salad was no more offensive than eating not eating meat. Mostly hang in there because it's so right to be veg.
