There was a film made called "An inspector calls". Set in 1912,Alistair Sim is an inspector who calls on a wealthy family to relay the news that a young woman has been found dead by poisoning. He needs to find out how the family were involved in her life. At first they all deny knowledge of her but as the plot unfolds they all appear to have been in some way responsible for her taking her own life.
Sim, plays a mysterious police officer whose accusations destroy the beautifully established domestic bliss.
    - No I'm not that smart - I googled it!

I think what they mean is describe such a scenario in that moment in time (?)
Hope this helps in some way(?!)

God I hate that book now, been doing essays on it all year :(. Anyway I think it's asking you to talk about the class system then, the status of men and women (in relation to the play) also talk about how the different characters have reacted to the different classes of people (Mrs Birling I think says that Eva Smith was having ideas "above her station") . Also talk about the apparent corruption in the play (which makes the inspector stand out as someone uncorruptable). Hope that helps.

Finnaz is right. Edwardian society (meaning the time in English history under King Edward) was characterized by a huge inequality between the rich and poor, with the new middle class only just emerging, and still heavily oppressed by taxation.

Class struggle was something that began to take focus during this time, and An Inspector Calls is an excellent literary representation of that struggle.

I'd reccomend that you check out this website:
    http://www.questia.com/library/book/a-readers-guide-to-edwardian-literature-by-anthea-trodd.jsp

It has some good resources for literary criticism on the Edwardian area.

Also, try googling "class struggle Edwardian literature"

You should come up with some good results.
