The children were rounded up and placed in temporary custody in a raid that began April 3 after a domestic violence hot line recorded a complaint from a 16-year-old girl. She said she was physically and sexually abused by her 50-year-old husband. State officials seized 416 children in a raid on a West Texas polygamist compound http://www.sltrib.com/ci_8927976 http://www.alternet.org/reproductivejustice/81772/ So besides the obvious issues in this story... (16 year old with 50+ husband and what she says she was forced to do) Who here would consider having more then one husband or wife? http://fieldnotes.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/04/15/892513.aspx I watched a morning show and they had three of the mothers on and were asking them very specific questions about how young were the girls who were "allowed" to marry. I tell you creepy is the most fitting word to describe how they reacted. Repeating that they loved their children and that they only acted out of love.. very cold stoney looks on their faces. Weird. What do you think?
well, i don't have a problem with willing polygamy, actually. it's the age at which these girls are being bartered off to old men that creeps me the hell out. but if a few people decide that they in fact WANT to be in a polygamous relationship, it doesn't bother me one iota. just so long and they're financially capable of supporting themselves, who cares?
Multiple wives? One would probably drive me insane! I agree with KC though, if people who are of age want to marry a million other people, then they should be able to.
Personally, I don't share. Willing adults, I don't care, but the young girls forced to "marry" old men is horrible. They nothing but sexual predators. I used quotations because these marriages are not legal ones...
I think KC is pretty spot on with my thoughts towards this subject... As for myself, I couldn't imagine being married to one person let alone multiple, every day I would be planning my escape, I'd have maps... But if people want to be married to more than one, then whatever floats their boats I guess... I concur...
I only have a problem with them pushing it on their daughters. They seem to just be broodmares for pedophiles. I agree with KC. I don't care if someone wants multiple wives or multiple husbands. I just think that it should be the persons choice, not what family members have pushed on them.
I dont understand though, why these women allow their daughters to be 'married' to nasty old men. Im sure it upsets them. Is it because these things groups get cultlike and the men are in charge?
it's one of the wierd things that CAN happen in hyper-religious groups with male leadership. the women don't stand up for their girls and they end up with sexual predators. that whole "male head of the household" doesn't work with crazy men.
^no fucking kidding. Im too mama bear to ever allow such a thing to happen, its sad to see others not stand up for themselves and their children. Ps I have been planning my vegetable garden and im making dinner and a pie for my family tonight. How homemaker am I ?
Yeah, this upsets me too.. But I think either these women are too scared to stand up or they feel as though it the right thing to do, that they actually feel that it is okay and that they are actually doing what they are supposed to be doing. Like the whole Waco Texas thing, they thought what they were doing was right because they were brainwashed I guess, so therefore these women forcing and allowing their little girls to be owned by men don't think they are doing anything wrong. Plus, I am sure that some were raised this way maybe before they had daughters of their own.. There are many reasons I guess...
It's a godforesaken cult...they brainwash these mothers when they are CHILDREN to believe that giving unto oneself is what GOD wants...it's easy to see how predators appear in these situations. It freaks me out to read about nieces who marry uncles and shit like that, too...*shudders* I agree with all of the above posters...polygamy is fine, as long as it is with consenting adults...
I totally agree. I have no problem being told what to do or what needs to get done, but you better have our family's best interest at heart and always be gentle and kind.
agreed.. there's an HBO show called Big Love about this. a compound of mormons, and the men are pretty much a mafia, and the women are raised to be wives, all of them pretty much conditioned to fear the outside world more than any cruelty going on in the compound. in the show, one of the men's moved out of the compound and brought his three wives. each wife lives in her own house with her child(ren) and hubby is on a rotation system for where he spends the night. gotta agree with lode and BSR, ten wives is ten too many.
