I've also been a bit curious about ovulation. I know there's a difference between having sex after your period vs. having sex close to or before your period. I heard that girls don't ovulate up to 14 days each month including the beginning days of their period--then they begin to ovulate. If you were to have unprotected sex... [Yeah, and I know a lot of you are saying that people who have unprotected sex are dumb "yada yada yada." Oh well, it happens especially if you've been dating someone for so long. It's worth asking this question for all the people out there with the same curiosity. I also know that you are saying that it's irresponsible--like I said it happens.] Anyway, if you were to have unprotected sex, would it be more dangerous doing it towards the start of your period or right afterwards? It seems to be that it's more dangerous to do it closer to the start of your period, yeah? I just wanted a 2nd opinion...a 3rd, or even a 4th one would be nice too. Thanx!
Ovulation begins 14-21 days from the start of your period. So just before, during and right after your period you would run the least risk of pregnancy...
Actually, I just want to caution about the whole "14 day" average model. The fact of the matter is, close to 50% of women do NOT ovulate based on this average. That average should be chucked out the window as it's responsible for a lot of stupid mistakes and, probably, pregnancies. A woman, in order to know, for sure, when ovulation occurs needs to track her own ovulation. The "safe" time will vary for every woman. Do not follow the average without knowing her ovulation because it's like playing Russian roulette with sperm. I'm someone who ovulates, for instance, very close to the end of my period. Which means, for me, it's NOT safe to have sex during my period or right after. It's safer for me to have sex prior to my period. Other women ovulate differently. A great book to track ovulation is "Taking Charge of Your Fertility."
