Darn and double-darn. I was talking to drumminmama this evening & she pointed out that the super yummy yogurt I've been enjoying for breakfast (vanilla Activia) has fish in it. How gross is that? I knew it had cow-juice in it, but FISH?!? ICK!!! I'll be checking my mom's Small-Planet cookbook collection this weekend for recipes, but does anyone have a tried 'n true recipe for a soy-based yogurt? I have Mom's old yogurt maker here and really have been planning to use it... I just haven't gotten around to it yet. But as long as I'm going to the "effort" of making my own yogurt anyway, I thought that I might as well try to make it dairy-free. Oh - and if anyone else DOES make their own yogurt, do you have a favorite brand that you use as a starter? I think Mom used Old Home (dairy) brand, but it's been 20-ish years since I remember homemade yogurt. love, mom
sorry. I ruin flavored dairy yogurt for everyone. Have I ever led you here? http://www.ellenskitchen.com/clearlight/index.html http://www.ellenskitchen.com/clearlight/soyyogurt.html
Yeah, it's pretty gross... but I'd rather know than run around eating it, y'know? The kids & I rearranged our kitchen "counter-sitters" for the warm months, and have replaced the crockpot with the yogurtmaker. With it sitting there staring at me, I'm quickly gaining the urge to learn how to use it and finally did a search this morning for recipes. Hillbilly Housewife had a few that looked good, and I'm sifting through a google-search right now for soy yogurt. Looks like I've got some experimenting to do to see who's tastes best. I'll have to check out ellens kitchen too - THANKS love, mom
There are tons of soy yoghurts that have vegan stamps in the shops here in the UK. Do you have alpro over there? Weve gone off them lately though, theyre a bit sugary
see, most of the soy yogurts are sweet, and I am looking to make raita and use it as a potato topping. I will start making my own, I guess.
The other thing you have to look for with yogurt is gelatin. It is in many of the brands in the store. The weird thing is it will be in one flavor but not in another flavor of the same brand. Like strawberry has gelatin but blueberry does not. It's gotten to the point that I don't even buy yogurt any more. I'm not totally opposed to drinking a bit of milk but I refuse to eat bones and hoves. Kathi
Yah I noticed a few weeks ago yogurt has gelitian and all of that crap in it. I bought Bio best yogurt... I am not sure if theres anything bad in there though. It just sadi milk or something and some sort of bacterial cultures.
usually plain yogurts don't have gelatin, it's used to stabilize non fat and fruit yogurts. Pectin does the same: have a Safeway? their O line is pectin. Mountain high (local to me) has pectin. A friend wrote a cookbook (he's out on a book signing tour...what a change for a head)and he suggests all fruit type spreads in plain yogurt.
Well I finally sterilized the yogurt maker, and tried. I tried using the only two kinds of soy yogurt I could get my hands on that had active cultures in it, and neither one worked... I ended up with a really nice buttermilk (which made fantastic vegan pancakes, by the way!) both times. After hunting around, it would seem that MOST people seem to have a tough time using soy yogurt as a starter, so I'll be trying again this week. I'm going to use a dairy starter with soymilk... I figure it's got far less milk in it so I ought to be able to stomach it. It's not quite what I was hoping for, but I'll take it. I've had to have the kids finish up the activia, since I can't seem to stomach it now that I know there's fish in it & I MISS YOGURT!!! love, mom
