Anybody here ever read plato's republic,
I had to read it for my philosophy class. It was interesting. My professor said that most religions are based on plato's ideas. Personally I thought the ideas of thrasymachus were the most interesting, that there is no justice or morality but whatever the stronger decide is an advantage to themselves is just. Well I thought it was interesting anyway. Thanks for your ideas

Thrasymachus did have many interesting points. To me, he seemed to be the more centralized of the two. His perception of reality itself and of justice was more practical than Plato's, although the genius of Plato in thought and in action makes him the more intriguing of the two, as I see it.

plato never really answers Thrasymachus's arguement so I would have to say personally that plato's genius lies not in his thoughts but in his writing. It is almost as if he makes socrates the winner of the arguement but he clearly never answers thrasymachus's original querry. Plato never proved that there was only one thing that can make people happy he always assumes that there is one way to make people happy and that it does exist we just don't know what it is yet
