eh........ all they are doing is stopping restaurants/bakeries from grabbing huge bags of rice/flour from the warehouse stores ie costco/ sams club, etc....

but, seriously, though, why fret over something you cant control??

I have a strict diet and eat no wheat or gluten products at all...

(But still have about 30 pounds of rice here for an emergency, haha)

Wouldn't a temporary nationwide diet be a good thing anyway?

once more, it seems to me like this is largely a problem in the US. after reading a thread like this one, I asked a few family women I know, and none felt food prices had gone up at all. and I have difficulty believing food will get expensive in Asia any time soon, considering how cheap it was when I was there last, and all that rice they grow.

This reminds me of Y2K a tad bit of instability and the American consumer goes crazy.
I think Americans and other devolved countries have been stable for so long that any instability in the consumer market freaks people out.

Life is full of changes no reason to freak out.

It has actually been happening for a few years that is why the price of gold has gone from $250. an ounce to almost $1000. in like 5 years.

Oil is running out things are going to change, Yeah I think it is stupid to replace food crops with fuel crops but that is what the economy is based on. Really all these dumb assess need to quit diving around SUV trucks to get a fountain drink.

We are a culture of over abundance a few years of lean finical time won’t kill us. Fat people might lose some weight and vegetarians might have to start eating hot dogs and Raman noodles oh well.

Sparked by this thread, I did something I don't often do. I just read the national newspaper(english edition) "The Bangkok Post" and noticed that the price of rice has climbed from 12baht a kilo to 16baht a kilo recently.

Like I said, most people round here grow their own rice, so this price rise will actually bring some of the poorer farmers some extra cash, I believe.

right, so the degree of crisis would depend on a society's reliability on oil. then it is reasonable to assume that the most modern of today's societies would be affected the most, and it also makes sense that the US, having such a large active military force, fuel wasting vehicles and large population would need a lot of oil.

I can't help but think that all the "doomsday is coming!" stuff is mainly going to affect the US, so I'm not really concerned. I mean, it sucks for you guys of course, but maybe this sort of thing is what is necessary to get a society on the right track. I'm sure you'll adapt.

it does amuse me that so many people fail to take into account how problems in other nations do in fact cause problems in other nations. we're so heavily intertwined.

this is true, and should worst come to worst for the US, the world would certainly feel the effects in many ways. but really, what you're seeing is a mix of laziness and a lack of foresight, I think. how cheap was fuel in the US for years? and american cars are known for spending loads of fuel. this frivolousness may have come back to bite you. perhaps your entire economy was faulty in the way it relied on gas prices being low (they have never been low here. minimum $1.50 per litre for as long as I can remember, now $2.50/litre. and like I said, prices remain the same.)
