Can anyone reconmend me any great spots to get away and camp, or back pack? A friend of mine wants to check out Starve Rock and whatnot, and I was just wondering if there are any other places you guys might suggest while we're at it. Thanks!
I live right near Starved Rock so Im there at least 3 times a week in the summer. Starved Rock is a little overratted...theres a bunch of stairs and woodden walkways which takes away from its natural beauty. Try Matthiessen instead... its like 2 minutes up the road from Starved Rock and Buffalo Rock (about 5 minutes from Starved Rock) is great too and theres 3 buffalos that live there all year which is awesome. Those are the three parks out here so you should just hit them all up. But serisouly Starved Rock is very touristy.
The BEST place to camp around here in my opinion is the Mississippi Palisades State Park in Savanna, IL. From Chicago I believe it to be about a 4 hour trip.
