I've had my dreads for about 8 months, and i have a few dreads that are really big, and they kind of split up at the end into tinyer dreads. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how i can make big dreads into tinyer dreads? I've tried ripping them, but Its so big that I cant do it with my strength! Is it a good idea to cut them? perhaps just slicing them a little bit, enough for me to rip them?
    THanks in advance!

once theyre really tightly combined its too late u gotta keep ontop of ripping so they dont become 1 huge dread

i unpicked a fatty and made two, just two nights ago. I used a bodkin (thick, blunt needle ) and teased the hair apart from the centre of the bottom of the dread, working my way up. Couldnt get it exactly central, so one is slightly thicker than the other but it worked. Some of the knots were still in, but I mostly had to re backcomb both of them. I washed last night and they stayed apart :) Hope that helps

I really need to unpick a dread and make it into 2. I'm only about a month in, so do you think I would lose a lot of hair if I tried to comb it out? It was backcombed pretty tightly, but its still young.

As you can see, it really should be two separate drerads-

Yeah, your right. It does bother me a bit, but what can ya do... I'm starting to realize that however this turns out is just how it turns out!! Besides, the risk of my hair being ultra thin and/or falling out after I combed through it would leave me with a HUGE mess on my hands.

The main reason I wanted to do this was becasue the volume and # of dreads is a lot better on the opposite end of my head, so it looked and felt very uncomfortable and odd. Luckily I had a dread right in the center that I just floped to the other side and it seems to have even things up a bit.

i dont mean to be harsh.
but dreads have to be a part of a natural life style...you can't pick and choose where they are going to fall, and controll every little dread.
just chill...lett'm be....ya know rip a little when you see it neccisary, but for the most part....just sit back and relax my friend...dreads are natural and will come :)

I think it's better to unpick them now while they're still soft. IMO it would look better in two. I split mine in the same place, glad I did. :)

I think fatty dreads are really good...but if that was my head, I'd feel that was a slightly odd position for a dread with a base as wide as that one. But you said you fixed/disguised it by rearranging a bit so maybe it's fine.
I had one that was heading in the same direction, and actually I fixed it a bit carelessly but it worked. I literally just tore away at the base of it until it was the right size, leaving a load of tufties that'll dread up eventually or join another dread that works better.
    That make any sense?
