Hi guys and girl, i thought a posted about my dready journey. It all started about 2 months ago, when i asked my housemates girlfriend to dread my hair for me. At the time the only advice that i had found was from the like of knottyboy and DHHQ, and had decided to spent my money on one of their dreadkits. Oh god what a mistake. So after sitting for over 6 hours let her backcomb and put wax in my hair, i finally had my head of candles!!!!!!!!!!! :-0 Now for themself it just felt wrong almost straight away, i was happy to have them in my hair. Im someone who has never used products in my hair, and to suddenly have a hair full of wax wasn't for me! It made me feel very queasy. Luckily for me i found this wonderful place of knottyknowhow, and posted a thread about what had happened, and was lucky to get a lot of reply from people offering their help and advice. So with 3 days of pain and heart ache i managed to wash and comb all the wax out, i will say know that it was extremely had to remove all the wax, so people who have used wax on your dreads i can see that it can almost be impossible to remove it all. Here is that thread: http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=289534 So one month in i have decided to go down the natural route with no back combing, and just letting my hair do its thing. Here is a photo that i took about 5 days after i original went down the wax route after all the washing and combing. And here is my hair a month into my dready journey. I have to say that the journey since has just been getting easier and easier, its so nice to feel free from trying to make my hair anything. It my hair and it'll do what it wants to, and i have also realised that it me people judge in the end and not my hair, my hair is just part of the bigger picture. And for once its starting to reflect who i am, rather than me trying to make it reflect who i think i am!!!! Anyway id like to thank soaring eagle and nakedtreehugger for their kind words when i started the wax route. Cheers and i hope you enjoy reading. And ill try and update every now and again to let you all see how my hair is getting on. Alex )
yeah man, natural is the way!!!! I'm so glad to see someone else going the natural route on here, it seems almost everybody backcombs. I can see a huge difference already, definitely keep us updated on the progress. haha if I could give you a big high-five right now i would! :hurray:
Oh cool, I'm glad I checked in on this thread I'm completely new to dreading ((haven't started yet, but today will be the first day of neglect I suppose) , and you're hair is nearly the exact same length and volume as mine, judging from the picture. I've got strawerry blonde hair though. Awesome, I'm definetely going for the dreads.
Your hair is amazing! I wish I had the balls to leave it alone and go all natural, but I backcombed. (Funnily enough, it seems to be doing what it wants anyhow. Tons of hair is escaping and joining other pieces.) I'm looking forward to seeing you progress!
Lil Update: Well guys i thought i'd get on here and give you all an update on whats going on with my dreadies!!! Well first of all its been about 8.5 months since i started my journey and i can't believe how quickly its gone, its been a really humbling experience of patience and learning to be happy with the now rather than where you'd like to be in the future only time will get u there and if your not happy now, then how can you be happy later. Anyway enoughs enough here are some pictures, Let us all know what you think, and ask any questions about the process for you newbie dreadheads or those thinking of going the natural route. I've still got a way to go but i love the fact they are always changing.
Yeah i'm loving having gone down the natural 'neglect' root as there is absolutely no stress involved and i reckon once all the undreaded hair dreads i'll prefer the look of them to slightly more maintained dreads.
Hey yeah i did, i suppose the first parts to dread was the hair around the crown on the side that i sleep on then the back around the crown and then the other side. Then last bits to dread was the hair around the bottom of the back of my head, and i'm still waiting for the hair at the front to finish dreading.
They are absolutely gorgeous! Your hair is made to go natural, fair dues man you made a great choice, they seem to have just bulked and seperated so well What an inspiration. Alex
Cheers for the comments guys, its been a really test of patience, but a big thanks is in order for SE who gave me help and advice when i first went down the wax route :-O!!!!! And later was the inspiration for going completely natural.
