My little dreadlets are all backcombed and ready to mature. (though I may break some of them up) I know about the neglect method, but I wanted a tad more perceived control, and thanks to Hip Forums Dreadlock board I did not put wax into my hair.

I have dumpled all of the DreadHQ stuff I bought with the exception of the comb and shampoo. I am interested at this point of the issue of dread beads. I have a couple of tiny dudes that I would like to grow together, but I am not sure how to go about ordering or making dread beads, to encourage my guys to rub up against each other.

Any advice? (I love this forum, btw. I will refer everyone I know to it, and advise them against the "easy wax" route. I am so glad I dumped the wax!)

are you talking about taking beads, and putting more than one dread through the bead, so they will grow together?
I would do a hemp wrap over the dreads if i were you.
But you can get beads lot of places. I used to buy plain wooden ones from Sallys, and woodburn cool designs on them.
i know they are expensive, but beads and sleeves are the only things i'll buy from knottyboy or dreadheadHQ

I went home to my parent's house a while back and found the old treehouse we built as kids still standing... somewhat. I cut off a piece of the tree and carved my own bead out of it. It has lots of meaning to me. Simple, creative, and meaningful.

I haven't been able to find beads or sleeves at any stores locally (not even Sally's). I'm afraid I might end up buying them from DHHQ, but it almost doesn't feel right buying from them, supporting them.... Like I'm part of the problem and all.

Anyone know of a retail place that would likely sell beads large enough for dreads?

You can pick up a tool that sorta sands down the inside of beads to make them wider, dunno the name of it but here they are sold in the wood craft isle of the craft shop. Ive used it on wood, glass and clay.

I would think you'd be able to use a dremel tool also if you wanted to widen the inside bore of a bead--haven't tried it myself yet though

check out etsy.com dude, there's lotsa stuff there. unfortunately, my dreads aren't fat enough for a lot of the beads, and i'm not a fan of the peyote stitches for mine... i might start making some though out of clay... any thoughts on types, designs, etc. you'd like to see? i have an etsy shop, so if i make any, they'll be up there! :) (nakedgoddessarts, if you're interested... i know, i'm shamelessly promoting myself!) right now i'm just kinda looking for inspiration/ideas, so if anyone wants to share, feel free!

oh, and i got my wood beads in a big pack at michael's craft store. craft stores have all kinds and sizes and shapes of beads!

yeah, i'm just getting stuff up and running. i've been making hemp jewelry for a while now, usually just for myself and friends, but i've been inspired lately (unemployment makes you look for ways to make money anywhere lol!) to put stuff up for sale. so we'll see where that goes! i'm definitely looking to expand the kinds of things that i have for sale... so far it's just the hemp stuff, but i'm working on more, have lots of ideas! :)
