Who opposed the Hippies?

Hello, my name is Sarah, and I am currently working on an essay project that centers around the birth of the Hippie Movement. I've been able to gather countless sources on the background and philosophy of Hippie culture, but what I am really lacking are sources from those who opposed the movement. This essay is required to have outlooks of at least three different groups. My questions are: What kind of groups out there were against your culture, what did they do to work against it, and how did they speak out? How did your parents react? What was the government's perspective? How did the media inflate your ideals and induce stereotypes? Were there any other groups that stood out against you?

Who opposed THE HIPPIES?

In 1960's-197O's TERMINOLOGY: "The MAN" ("Finklestein" on the hit TV SERIES show: "DHARMA AND GREG"), "The ESTABLISHMENT", "The MILITARY - INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX", "The SQUARES" and/or "The STRAIGHTS". Some "REDNECKS" and "HARD HATS" (but not all of them), or what would be known as "CONSERVATIVES" and/or "RIGHT-WINGERS".

In 2008 TERMINOLOGY: The New World Order (NWO), "The ILLUMINATI", some INTELLIGENCE AGENTS (but NOT ALL) and/ or "The SECRET WORLD GOVERNMENT". DAVID ICKE would say "shape-shifting" REPTILIAN ALIENS (from THE ORION CONSTELLATION), but that's an entirely different viewpoint!!!

THE CIA (Central Intelligence Agency - Langley, Virginia) via "MK-ULTRA" (Mind Control) and THE TAVISTOCK INSTITUTE (30 Tabernacle St., London, England, UK) actually helped to create "THE HIPPY SUB-CULTURE" (and DRUG SUB-CULTURES) as an "experiment" in SOCIAL ENGINEERING. There is much documenation to prove this!!! PAUL WARBURG financed a project to produce LSD, so that "THE ILLUMINATI" (mostly CIA) could use it as a type of "BIO-WEAPON".

The BABYBOOMER GENERATION (implying a massive "SPIKE" in POPULATION GROWTH after World War 2 - commonly referred to as "a PIG being swallowed by a PYTHON", meaning that this "short term" population growth would continue throughout future history as a large "population grouping") produced TOO MANY "rebellious' TEENAGERS all at once and TOO SUDDENLY (and thus became a POTENT "threat" to the "MILITARY - INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX"), so as a "DEFENSIVE MANUVER", the BABY BOOM GENERATION were "lured" into a pre-"SOCIALLY-ENGINEERED" CULTURE of DRUG USE and turning one's interests "INWARD", instead of expressing ANGER OUTWARD toward THE POWERS THAT BE!!! It's that simple!!!

However, THE HIPPY CULTURE flourished on, took "a life of its own" toward a MORE POSITIVE direction, and in a way, became TRULEY "COUNTER-CULTURE", and not just a "SOCIALLY-ENGINEERED" version!!! Some aspects of SOCIAL-ENGINEERING can "back-fire", or not turn out as planned and/or expected. HUMAN SPIRITUAL EVOLUTION moves on!!!

Dr. Timothy Leary engineered a "personality TEST" for the CIA, of which the CIA calls "THE LEARY", but was he a real-life "CIA AGENT"? I don't believe he was, but he was at least "used" by them, to further their SOCIAL-ENGINEERING AGENDAS.

"SOCIAL ENGINEERING" doesn't imply that our CONTROLLERS "control" every aspect of our lives (although they may be trying to do so), they just PUSH the direction and "AGENDAS" of SOCIETY toward their liking!!! YOUR INDIVIDUAL LIFE is still "controlled" by you (and you're RESPONSIBLE for that), but your "FREEDOMS" are being limited for you to reach YOUR FULL POTENTIAL as a SPIRITUAL BEING!!!

this is something hippies don't like to amite to. but it was (and still is) a power struggle. we humans through out our history have allways had those who are one up and those who are one down. this occures not just with hippies but other groups too. what happens is that those who have the power (one up) don't trust those who are powerless (one down.) all the countre-culture groups and, sub-groups that have arose since the 1950's have been fighting for a place at the table with the powerfull. the powerfull don't want to share power. sometimes you have to fight for it or even take it. the 1960's came down to one demand from the powerfull and that was... dignity. some gains where made but, there is still one hell of a long, long, way to go on that one! what you have asked is one hard question. we are dealing with things that are quite soft and deal with the social sciences. whole books have been written on your questions and, i am only able to give you the most skimpest of an answer. i hope this is of help to you.

 

Man that's one of the best posts I've ever seen around here. You are clearly very accomplished as a researcher.
One of the conversations/debates I've gotten into around here from time to time is about who were the (60s) hippies allies. Some folks seem to think that the anti-war/anti-draft, the civil rights, and anti-pollution movements and marches were just done by hippies.
So anyway, I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on the subject of who were the allies.

While you gave me some good reminders as to where I could look for modern-day stuff--and I really do appreciate that--,what I should have specified in my intro post was that I need primary sources for the BIRTH of the movement. That means opinions originating from when you all were young.

Your opinions mean millions, and because you all lived through it and I didn't, just your reply is going to make my paper that much better.

To further the topic, does anyone remember how your parents reacted to your decisions? My understanding is that you wanted to live an alternative lifestyle to what was then "The Establishment", or the strict enforements of getting married, geting a job, and living life the plain old boring way. But wen you all rebelled in whatever way, what was their opinion? This is VITAL information that I need. Thanks again!

The only TRUE "ALLIES" of the HIPPIES would be certain SPIRITUAL and RELIGIOUS GROUPS, mostly of the CHRISTIAN FAITHS (CATHOLICS and PROTESTANTS) and FAR EASTERN FAITHS (INDIAN (of INDIA) - HINDUISM, "HARE KRISHNAS", BHUDDAISM, "TIBETAN MONKS" and maybe CHINESE "DOWISM", PLUS I'd include the belief systems of our "NATIVE AMERICANS".

JESUS preached LOVE, COMPASSION and PEACE, and was known as "The Prince of Peace". The FAR EASTERN PHILOSPHIES, especially the HARE KRISNAS, also advocated LOVE, COMPASSION and PEACE!!! NATIVE AMERICANS have also preached of RESPECT for "THE GREAT SPIRIT" and "MOTHER EARTH", which are excellant IDEALS and BELIEFS to uphold!!!

Remember "THE JESUS FREAKS" and "HARE KRISHNAS" who would almost always been seen (in the late 60's and early 70's) at local AIRPORTS, SHOPPING MALLS and many times just in THE STREETS, offering their LOVE and PEACE toward the world??? A "JESUS FREAK" is just a SPECIALIZED-type of HIPPY (with STRONG HOLY BIBLICAL -GOD and JESUS "belief systems"). "HARE KRISHNAS" have been around for quite awhile and are usually very SPIRITUAL and FRIENDLY people!!! NATIVE AMERICANS are ANCIENT (originating from ANCIENT "ATLANTIS"???) and WISE!!!

Dr. TIMOTHY LEARY was "heavy" into THE EASTERN PHILOSOPHIES, as were THE BEATLES!!! Remember the BEATLES encounters with the "MAHARISHI MAHESH YOGI"??? When I attended the "7TH ANNUAL MONROE STREET FAIR" (part of the "37 ANNUAL ANN ARBOR HASH BASH"), on APRIL 05TH (of this year - 2008), there was a big "DRUMMING CIRCLE" of "HARE KRISHNAS" dancing and enjoying the beautiful day!!!

There was a 1969 "UNITED ARTISTS" DOCUMENTARY movie entitled: "REVOLUTION - THE MOVIE" (which is available from a "MANUFACTURED IN GERMANY" DVD (UAS 5158) and starring "LOUISE" MALONE - HIPPY NAME: "TODAY", based on Jack O'Connel's 1968 DOCUMENTARY MOVIE: "THE HIPPIE REVOLUTION"), which shows an actual, "REAL-LIFE" interview of a small group of CATHOLIC NUNS and PRIESTS (sitting on the grass (not SMOKING it) on the lawn of the SAN FRANCISCO "GOLDEN GATE" PARK) discussing how they "approved" of the "HIPPY MOVEMENT", and one NUN explains how that if she wasn't a NUN, then she would opt to be a HIPPY CHICK!!! LOVE those HIPPY CHICKS!!!

If you read the "specified" LINKS, that I posted on the first POST (of mine, on this particular THREAD), especially concerning the"TAVISTOCK INSTITUTE" (and particularily: the "INSTITUTE FOR POLICY STUDIES - (IPS)"), you'd find out that: "BARNETT and RASKIN controlled such diverse elements as: "the BLACK PANTHERS" and the "RADICAL", LEFTIST group: "THE WEATHERMEN UNDERGROUND". Ex-KGB-agents maintain that many "LEFTIST" groups were "SECRETLY-CONTROLLED" by THE COMMUNISTS!!!

POPULAR "LEFTIST" groups, involved in: "RADICALISM", POLITICS, "ANTI-WAR", "ANTI-DRAFT", CIVIL RIGHTS and the ENVIRONMENTALISTS are usually NOT the HIPPIES ALLIES, as they are "SECRETLY-CONTROLLED" by the CIA, TAVISTOCK INSTITUTE, and/or THE COMMUNISTS (by their "INFILTRATING AGENTS")!!! There are some EXCEPTIONS, of course!!!

You must also consider that the "RIGHT-WING" groups (like the current "PATRIOT" and "MILITIA" groups) are also "INFILTRATED" by "COVERT OPERATIONS" SECRET GOVERNMENT AGENCIES!!! This is just the "AGENDA-based" tactic (from "SOCIAL-ENGINEERING") of "DIVIDE and CONQUER", which is PURE "MACHIAVELLIAN" (or "HEGELIAN"- CIA term) in concept!!!

This just means our "higher-up CONTROLLERS" are really the TRUE CAUSE of our "DIAMETRIC CONFLICTS" (i.e. a "HIDDEN or ESOTERIC" cause), and it is not just a "HIPPIES vs. SQUARES" issue (i.e. a "SUPERFICIAL" CAUSE)!!! Our "SUPERFICIAL" lives are being "manipulated" by "ESOTERIC" "consciousness" and forces (usually kept "HIDDEN" from us)!!! Many of these "ESOTERIC" influences on us, are from HYPER-SPACE-TIME DIMENSIONS, but your ESSAY is "specified" toward SOCIOLOGICAL FACTORS ONLY!!!

We are foolish "SHEEPLE", and are merely just being "played" as CHESS "PAWN" playing pieces (by "higher-up" BEINGS)!!! They "play" us AGAINST OURSELVES!!! In CONCLUSION, the HIPPIES "TRUE ALLIES" are mainly: SPIRITUAL, RELIGIOUS, NATIVE AMERICAN groups and HOPEFULLY OURSELVES!!! Sometimes the HIPPIES, plus their "ALLLIES", are labeled as: "THE RAINBOW PEOPLE"!!!

"NAVAJO" (NATIVE AMERICAN) 'humor": NASA approached NAVAJO "ELDERS" and asked them to create a NAVAJO "phrase" (in their own language) to be placed on THE MOON, by some ASTRONAUTS. The ELDERS agreed, and provided NASA with a WISE NAVAJO "phrase" (who's messsage would be revealed to NASA, after it was placed on THE MOON, and upon the return of the given astronauts). This was accomplished, and finally NASA would learn of the NAVAJO "message" placed on THE MOON. The WISE NAVAJO ELDERS simply said that it stated: "DON'T TRUST THESE PEOPLE, THEY'LL STEAL YOUR LAND!!!" LOL

Well without doing all that research and just speaking off the top of my head there were a lot of right-wingers out there. There were a lot from the WWII generation who resented our resistance to the Vietnam war draft. Many believed whole heartedly in the domino theory and thought we need to fight those commies over there or someday we'll be fighting them over here. "America, love it or leave it!" they would say, not realizing that most of us did in fact love this country and felt America was going in a wrong direction we were trying to fix. The peace symbol was called the footprint of the American chicken by those who felt cowardice was the only true reason behind dodging the draft.

Others opposed hippies believing they were nothing but of bunch of drug addicted, unbathed hedonistic bums costing everyone extra taxes to pay for their welfare checks. While it's true that there were those who exploited the very system they claimed to oppose, most were self-sufficient and kept their drug use at a reasonable level.

There were organizations such as the John Birch Society who wanted all hippies drafted, and more moderate clubs such as the VFW who thought we were unpatriotic. The Ku Klux Klan was known to have given some forced haircuts; the south was very unfriendly to hippies in the early years of the movement. And of course the cops hated us.

Eventually middle America came around and joined us in opposing the war, good thing too because by this time the movement was losing steam. But when our culture starts running amok the counterculture will grow, as it has the past few years in reaction to EIGHT GODDAMN YEARS of Bush & Co.

 

Mkay, this gives me some good insight. I just wish I had some direct sources. I have to do all of this bibliographical flashcards/notecards and baloney. But this really helps. If all of you don't mind, I'll try to quote you in my essay, but because I haven't got your actual names, I can't guarantee much real credit... maybe I should just not quote you, then.

 

If you were not with us or at least behind us, you pretty much opposed us, there was not much middle ground when it came to the hippy movement, our parents, the goverment, and main stream society were opposed to our values. So all closed minded people were opposed to us. Or that is the way I saw it, sorry I did not give you like 10,000 words to explane it but it seemed pretty short and sweet to me, you were either with us or against us.

Everybody with short hair and a reason to maintain the status quo. They feared what would happen if the movement won. Can you imagine the changes?

I would suggest researching Emmett Grogan (b. 1943 d. 1978), who was the founder of the Diggers in Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco, as well being the inspiration for many better-known 1960's people. He wasn't originally from San Francisco, or even the West Coast - he was from New York. Some say that he was the only real hippie.
