if you're traveling for a few months or more, what do you pack? do you bring anything that has sentimental value but no practical use?
Nope. Only the necessities and a few clothes. I also bring my laptop and cellphone. Aside from that, I simply purchase other items from the destination itself.
I personally don't bring anything, unless it's useful, with the exception of a journal/notebook sometimes and maybe a couple of good books. If I'm going to a hot climate, I bring as little as possible, especially if it is cheap there. If it's a cold climate, I generally pack a bit more stuff. One thing that I've learnt though is to sometimes carry some small souvenirs typical of your country. They can make great gifts to some of the kind locals you meet along the trip who help make your trip more memorable.
I have this little Buddha I bought, and he's perfect for putting the insect repellant twirl on, so I always bring him with me. I like your idea of bringing souvenirs from your country, but I'm probably too cheap for that this time. minimalistic packing is definitely the way to go, though I do like to bring a few of my good t-shirts and boardies. I'll probably bring 10-15kg of stuff all up. a laptop and mp3 player would be nice to have, but I can see them breaking easily too.
It can be stuff as simple as a cheap keyring or even just a postcard or some snacks typical in your country. No real outlay. It's also nice to have a few photos of home so you can show people what it's like where you're from.
