I'm trying to buy a house that's surrounded by national forest land. Could I plant a little garden on national forest land or would that be frowned upon? Thanks.
Technically, no. Its public property If you're out in the middle of nowhere, who cares? If the forest cops walk in on it, they might cause trouble but otherwise no big deal. It is possible to lease land in some circumstances, but you need to keep everything on your own property so you don't have the forest service in your hair. x
You have to remember that in forests which are harvested, forestry workers come about more often than you think. From thinning tree distribution to collecting the seeds, it's impractical to live in any sort of substantial dwelling in a working forest. I've looked into the topic quite well and in a working forest I haven't really found part of the life cycle where I could guarantee you would be undisturbed for several years without good fortune. It's also horribly dark and wet - the trees stop the wind flow so nothing will hardly ever dry. Though this often provides a useful source of mushrooms. Some forests are more suitable than others though, buy a book on silviculture!
