And I realized we all translate our thoughts into words and language. Why? It's natural for me, but shouldn't we recognize our thoughts by just what they mean, and not "I want another slice of pizza"? Try thinking without words, just emotions, wants, needs, and whatever else. Recognize a thought for what it is before you dumb it down with words. Babies don't use language or words to think. They know what their brain waves mean to them naturally.

I really confused myself when i first thought about this, but I think it's really interesting.

Well, babies operate on basic instincts. As we develop, we learn a different way to interpret feelings that is more advanced.

I agree with nakilarx. The larger your vocabulary the better you will be able to share thoughts and feelings.

There is a diffrence between sharing thoughts and jst thinking them. We are thought to think in a linear fashion, how ever there are different ways to think.

as far as a large vocabulary enabling you to express yourself you must surround yourself with people of simalar vocabulary in order for that to work

I think in pictures, then try to translate using inadequate language.
i love to figure stuff out, but i hate long division if i dont have a pen/paper

i start many sentences with "think of it this way..."
anybody seen "The Stand" AND read the book by Stephen King? the book allowed your mind to picture the gore, and the stench of Captain Tripps, but the movie could never match the mind. never ever. speaking of books, where'd i leave my copy of "The Long Walk"... that one is my favorite short story of his.

Actually, autistic people think in pictures in colors, so that is one differing way of thinking.

so if we didnt have a written/spoken language, which is what you "think" using (if you speak english, in your mind, you talk in english), would we just rely on the most basic primitive thinking? basically just eat, run away, sleep, hunt...

On that point I think that if we didn't have language we would have a few abstract thoughts, but not in any way that we could think of right now since we are so intensively trained to use language even when not comunicating with others.
But then again words could simply be the difference between being able to develop all of the things that humans have developed and that is tthe only thing that separates us from the rest of the animals.

dude i have thought about that before.

this reminds me of this clip from 'waking life'.

you can't express everything you feel or think through the language or words we have, like idk i was really high when i watched this it so i might have interpreted it wrong, but i was thinking like i bet in the future...there will be another thing like language but more advanced like something we can't even imagine now cause we don't know what it is...like a way to get someone to REALLY know how you're feeling/thinking not just through the words we use now.

i've thought about this a lot. and it's made me ask lots of people, "do you think in words or not?" most have said they think in words, which leads me to believe i'm crazy because i do not and never have. maybe i'm autistic. idk.

How do you know you dont think in words? Can you define how you think at all? And paperplane, that would prolly happen if we can use our neurotransmitters more effectively.
