Hi, I just had the pleasure of watching a documentary called "The Weather Underground." The documentary was about the weathermen, having interviews with members and great topics of discussion. I am posting here to ask if anyone knows of any good books or other documentaries I could check out to get more info on this group. The documentary was amazing and really made me think about my life and the way I live it. I want to become more of an activist to speak out against what is happening in MY OWN country. I am a political person to some extents but am trying to become more involved. Thank you for your help Namaste
The Weathermen were the late 1960s and early 1970s leading radicals;everyone else including "MOVE" out of Philadelphia and the Black Panthers out of Oakland took a back seat to The Weather Underground . They seemed to encourage and even relish protesting and getting involved. Getting arrested was an honor to them it seemed. Basically they used violence and its threat to intimadate in an attempt to fight Nixon and his establishment. They fought bravely at the Democratic Presidential Convention in 1968 with several members recieving serious head wounds and even a few broken bones if memory serves me. They also converged on Chicago again in 1969 with several dozens of there members being arrested for an event that came to be known as "Days of Rage." The more violent extremists amoung them during that time were responsible for numerous bombings in places like Harvard University, corporate headquarters of Fortune 500 company's and even some state and federal government buildings. I believe they also had a shoot out with an armored car they were trying to rob in 1971/72. They often praised Charles Manson and helped to free Dr. Timothy Leary from prison. Wherever there was protests and violence in the name of government dissent, the Weathermen seemed to be there. But after the notorous townhouse explosion in New York City in 1970 I believe. I think It belonged to actor Henry Fonds wife who was home at the time. The group was then forced to go into hiding. Because of the increased federal and local police attention and the negitive press the explosion caused. They never seemed to recover in the publics perception of this one event;and they seem a distant memory to me now.
Thank you for that info.. The documentary covered a lot of what you said. I'm sure the documentary was biased though. TY Namaste
