So i lay my future into your hands.. which do i pick as my 1st for uni? I have till may 6th.

Reading uni - Applied Ecology and Conservation
Exeter, cornwall campus - Conservation Biology and Ecology

I really don't know if i want a quiet place in the countryside in Penryn or a little more bustle in Reading. Reading has 15,000 students, exeter 2000. I've visited both and they seemed equally great :(

Which course is more academically challenging? Which requires higher grades? They're considerations as you should probably go for the one that's going to set you up better for what you want to do in life. Also, though, you should consider that uni is where you're going to make some of your best friends, some fo whom will remain best friends for life. At the bigger, city uni you're more likely to have an active social life, places to go, people to see and with more people around you, the chances of meeting more people you connect with is much greater....

I'd go for Exeter, cos I'm applying for Plymouth and I REALLy love cornwall. That so makes me wish I took biology, I wanted to do a course like that...

What are you taking? I'm not doing biology, i do one very basic unit on ecology at the moment (i do countryside management) and i got offers no questions.

Hmm anyway yeah Exeter is really hard, they want top marks, DD which means i have to get a Distinction on every single assignment which i really don't think is possible. Reading want DM so i guess i'll do Exeter as my first and Reading as my second, although i should think i'll be going to reading, which is just as fab.

I took geography, media studies and philsophy and ethics, though at present I'm looking at Plymouth, Portsmouth, Brighton and Sussex for geography or Bournemouth for Environment and coastal management.

Both are good unis, cant go wrong with either. As you already know, Cornwall (Exeter)will be quiet and great for going to the beach/countryside, while Reading will have lots of students and is close to London so great for socialising and nightlife.

When I was your age I would have probably gone for Reading, but if I was to return to university again now, then I would go for Exeter, but it's your choice. Plymouth is also a good uni for Environmental Studies/Conservation degrees so maybe worth a look as an alternative.

    Good luck!

Hi Shirley, good luck with your decision.

According to the league tables - http://extras.timesonline.co.uk/gug/gooduniversityguide.php Exeter comes 17th and Reading 25th. I had a feeling that Exeter would have a higher ranking, and I think it has a better reputation, which would make a difference to employers.

Hope you have a great time wherever you go!

However, if you are not rich and slightly "sloaney" then you probably won't have as wicked a time because Exeter is full of Oxford/Cambridge rejects and the locals don't take very well to the students. There is a clear divide. But then that won't really matter since I presume you will be in halls or whatever for the first year then probably move in to somewhere like St James' or Mount Pleasant area after that, so you're kept pretty much out the way and all in one area of the city.
But then again, now that Plymouth has moved it's whole campus to Plymouth, that won't be as enjoyable either because it's nasty, dirty and generally reminds me of Swansea :)

But both are good unis so it all depends on what you really want to do. :)

Go to Cornwall, since I never read Reading right - it's such a dodgy name... I don't trust it!

Nay I think the relevent part of her post is Penryn, miles and miles from Exeter (Devon) more like Falmouth(Cornwall).

P.S. Brighton is apparently the drugs capital of Britain, whether that's a good or a bad thing depends on your point of view...

Well i picked Reading as my first because i don't think i can hack the grades for Exeter and i made friends at WOMAD last year from Basingstoke who i'm now pretty close to. Ooh i wanted to go to Brighton but i don't htink they had my sort of thing.

Now i must decide my gap year from September.. i was going to go to Thailand, Australia and New Zealand with my friend but she's pulled out..
