at the moment i feel like getting dreads again but im not too sure. i love my straight hair but then i love dreads too. i had them once with wax which was a bad choice but i'm planning to do it the natural way of just leaving them.

i was just curious bout tyin my hair? can i still do that? or will it slow the process down at starting point

No, tying them back won't do much hindering. I know alot of folks who got dreads by constantly wearing their hair back in a tail or in a bandana. Hairs easier to deal with back when your at a hot festival.

I wear a lot of phat hats and scarves cause mine arent a month and still forming. Also head bands I'm going to try to make dreads sleeves from t-shirts see what happens.

good choice on going natural, but you should be sure you want to do it because it takes a long time to form dreads naturally. and tying them back won't hurt them, as long as you just don't have them tied back all day long.

yea... bandanna works i wear them at work and by the end of the day i have like knots. by the way i have shoulder length hair and i guess its pretty thin too since i'm half asian.

how long is a long time lol? i've read it takes months/years or so but it the end it depends the type of hair and daily activities.

been few days that i havent washed my hair so im gonna keep it that way as long as i can and find some organic shampoo. i've stop brushing few days ago too =D

I'm not from Austrailia but maybe look for these:
Dr. Woods, Dr. Bronner, Knotty Boy Dread Shampoo
Those are the only ones I know. As long as it's non-residue it's good. Meaning, if you can pronounce the ingredients, you should be good.

Some people prefer showercaps, some people don't.
If you get your locks wet every day, make sure you dry them well. Don't leave them damp and moist or they will smell and start growing mold.

I shower every other day anyway, and that's when I wash my locks as well and I let them air dry. But if I got my locks wet every day, I would blow dry them on a low setting (which can potentially dry out your locks too much and cause brittle/breakageness) or use the showercap.

Well like you said, it depends on the type and length of the hair. Some people's may only take 6 months, other up to 2 years.

Mine takes about 7-8 hours to dry right now after i get it wet, so it's kind of a pain in the ass to get it wet in the shower everyday. and if you're not doing any kind of physical activities where your getting sweaty, there's not really a need to wash it. But yeah, I usually just tie it up in the shower.

and no, it won't make a difference if you get it wet everyday...although I like it cuz it feels good.

I'm guessing thin asian hair will probably take several years... but it'll happen. No problem wearing them up either, I wore my hair up practically everyday for work while they were in the beginning stages. Just take em down when you can to ease up on your scalp.

As far as washing and/or just getting it wet... just take it naturally. Don't worry about "how many days to wait" and all that nonsense. If your scalp feels dirty to you, wash it. If you feel like gettin your hair wet, get it wet. This is especially true if you go natural... why? Because most of your hair will still be "normal" for a good long while. As your hair get knottier and dreadier, you'll find that you'll need to wash less and less. I used to wash everyday when they were first forming. Now I only wash twice a week. Who knows how often it'll be in another year from now. I just let it all evolve naturally.

thanks for the replies =] im guessing my hair will knot up very very slowly lol.. it seems to knot up at the back but once i wash my hair.. it pretty much comes out again >_<

i only wash my scalp, avoiding touching my hair. its annoying that the knots comes out everytime i wash them but oh wells.. im not caring much tho but i would like to see some progress.

i was thinking of backcombing my hair to start it off but that would be taking the easy way out lol.

it's slow-going, but well worth it. I have straight, silky hair and mine took forever...

Not sure of your length, but if your hair is short it will take a lot longer too... once it reaches about shoulder length it'll start to knot up better. Dips in the ocean really helps it along too. The turning point for my hair was a trip to Mexico during which I was constantly in the ocean.

Basically try to forget about it and don't think too much about the end result. One of the lessons of natural dreads (IMO) is learning how to live in and appreciate the present.
