mine would have to be the beatles, or the eagles they are what influenced my taste in music and my charactor since i was little. it was what my parents always listened to and really music is one of the only connections i have with my family so those bands where and are still very important, but the dead gave me a new way to look at life and to be happy so they did too
mine would have to be Floyd. My all time favourite band, they just are part of me now i would say. Noone comes close to them.
I always get affected and influenced by the bands that I love in one way or another. But if we're talking major life change... Radiohead. When I was 12, I bought a used copy of "Amnesiac" and sat on my bed listening to it. And right into the middle of the first song ("Packt Like Sardines In A Crushed Tin Box"), I knew things would never be the same again. That album has helped me through so many horrible things, and Radiohead has influenced the way I think, feel, and act.
When I discovered Radiohead was when I realized that there's more to music than just top 40 and oldies, and that music can make you feel the deepest emotions. After that I started getting into ALL kinds of music and appreciating it so much more. I'm not even that much of a radiohead fan anymore, but i still appreciate them because of how they changed my perspective and such. Animal Collective changed my life the most by far. They made me have a deeper appreciation for music than I already had, and also inspired me to make music... Not that I can make music well, but I like to fuck around sometimes. No matter what mood I am in, what drug I am on, or where I am, there is some animal collective album I can listen to that corresponds.
Classic Rock in general, was what I was introduced to as a child, and theres no way I'm going to anything else.
ummm. Queen, actually. I know that's a bit of an odd favorite. I've known all the words to "bohemian rhapsody" since I was 5-ish. Freddie Mercury, over the course of my life, has taught me: Not only that life is short and only the good will die young, but also that life just isn't worth living if you can't be yourself while your here. May he R.I.P.
I would have to say the Dead. Well any band that the Grateful Dead members have been in I have atleast listened to. My least fave is Rhythm Devils although I was a fan of Mike Gordon with the Devils, just not a fan of the vocals. Outside of the Dead world would have to be Of Montreal. Man those guys are amazing.
I'd have to say when I was 15 maybe? my dad bought me The Wall....... and it was honestly the greatest thing I ever heard. I left it in my CD player for about two months and just listened to both disks constantly.. then I downloaded more and more Pink Floyd and fell in love. They definitely changed my life, or atleast my outlook on music.
Boyz II Men. They say music is the soundtrack of our lives; and when i think back to good times I had in the mid-90s, it seems that they were always singing in the background either on the radio or on my CD player. Water Runs Dry is a special favorite of mine...
MIKA..I had just been ditched by my ex and was close to breaking point, then I put on "Life in Cartoon Motion" and it suddenly just hit me that its okay to be happy again. Now everytime I play the album I always smile and bounce around.
Not really a band, but 2Pac influenced my life more than any other musician. His music made me take a bigger stake in my education and my future.
i came across tool at a point where i had practically lost all faith in modern music. tool stands as a beacon of light in the sea of darkness of shitty corporate music, and showed me that there are still some real artists out there.
*Puts on my "old fart" hat* Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell (if you can't tell by my sig and av), CSN&Y (and previously Buffalo Springfield), and the biggest influence on my generation and my crowd would be Dylan. Later on, in the early 80s, The Roches hit me big time and really influenced my singing style. Gave me a whole new range of thinking with harmonies. If you like female vocals, these three sisters are amazing. Whimsical writing - just wonderful hip folk music.
I agree i have a tattoo of layne staley on my leg. Tool are amazing they make you think and their lyrics are NEVER what they seem. i also love Pantera their songs just made me stronger, and Gov't Mule they have music for every mood good or bad.
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be the sun in somebody else's sky, but why, why, why can't it be, can't it be mine? and Guster, Bright Eyes and the Doors
