agreed. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone is out to get us as a country "because we are good". The only reason why they would want to get us now is because the US chooses to stick its nose in everyone's business and be world police. Sure, i understand if someone is ASKING for our help; that's one thing... but if another country wants to do its own thing and its not hurting anyone, then leave them be, yeah? I am an army wife myself, but I do have many friends in the marines. They're actually very good people, most of them, some of them aren't. Kind of like how a lot of civilians are good people, but a lot of them aren't.

But Berkeley is backing out on banning the marines.

I see both sides of the coin but I wonder if the people of Berkley realize this: If the marines aren't recruiting then anyone is up for grabs when they have to start drafting. So I say let them take who wants to go, because I sure as hell don't want to. In college, people are more aware of their self and goals which is why I think its ok. However, I DO think its wrong to allow marines into high schools though grabbing seniors before they decide to go to college. Its much easier to convince a High School senior to join the marines than someone in college.

 

So you're saying we should support recruiting and be afraid of the draft? Screw that shit. I'm not going to settle for a lesser evil. I for one do not and will not support recruiters, and if they resort to the draft, then some hell will definately be raised.

Again, they should stay out of high schools cause those kids are much easier to convince in joining the military. But in college, you know what you want to do and a recruiter isn't going to convince you to join or not. If you do join then its been something that you definitely have been considering already. So let the ones go who want to, but sending people who don't want anything to do with it in a draft is really fucked up. You may be a woman and not worried about the reality of a draft, but I sure as hell am heading to Canada. NOT being afraid of a draft is ignorant and its already been discussed that if a draft occurs again, college and gender quite possibly won't get you out of it. Yea a draft in a way is what the country needs to inspire progression (as I said in the other thread) but thats a really fucked up way of looking at it. Should thousands die for reform? So yea, marines shouldn't be trying to recruit people, but we shouldn't be in a fucking war, welcome to it.

 

Trust me, I don't think I'm special or excluded because I'm a woman. I don't want to see my friends and family go, and I know if they were to bring back the draft, women without kids would probably be taken next, despite McCain's recent sexist statement.

The soldiers actually aren't saving our country from anything at the moment. In fact, the fear of being told "you don't support our troops!" stifles free speech and honest debate in this country.

If they aren't for the war then why sign up? I know a lot of soldiers who aren't for the war now that they have seen it and know how stupid it is. But they joined out of desperation or a lack of a better future for themselves or they happened to be in the mood when a recruiter was around. The country did not have to do this. The country did not have to get into bed with the Saudi's, the country did not have to become dependent on a foreign power source, the country did not have to invade iraq.

People who are in the army, military, marines, etc. know EXACTLY what they're in for. they know they are signing up for death; for killing and shooting. Its not just "their job". Your husband signed up for WAR to KILL PEOPLE. if he was against war, against violence, against murder, he wouldn't have joined.

 

Last night I was helping prepare the site for a local RiverFest, an event to bring public awareness and support for the revitalization of a section of river into a public park.

A few years back my friend, who spear-headed the project, denied the National Guard a display in the festival, since they hadn't gone through the application and approval process like everyone else. He was also concerned that their proposed display, a pyramid of guns, might be insulting to some folks in this liberal town, so he turned them down. His decision was controversial, folks were all going off about "support the troops" (whatever that means, empty rhetoric as far as I'm concerned), and a fairly large sponsor of the project backed out due to the political implications.

The point is, the National Guard was arrogant to begin with, they came in with an air of entitlement, as if they should be granted carte blanche status because they're something special. I'm not sure 'cause I wasn't there, but my impression is the Marines acted the same way in Berkeley.

Take it from an eight year veteran of the armed services and the National Guard, some of these guys are aggressive, obnoxious pricks, they're brain washed to be, as I was. It's understandable that some communities might not be comfortable with their presence, and I don't blame them for turning them away.

And if you really wanna "support the troops", put pressure on your politicians to end the war and provide the veterans with the education and health benefits they deserve.
