So I had no idea where to post this, but anyway... I currently live in a small suburb in upstate NY and I've planned on moving out of state basically my whole life. Now I have a small family, some schooling behind me, and I'm looking for a good place to call home. I want to live in a good old fashioned hippy town, not too small, not too big, maybe close to a big city, where the weather is mild and comfortable (trying to get away from all the snow we get up here!), the people are super friendly and theres lots of arts/music/cultural stuff going on all the time.. maybe a liberal college town, where theres lots to do outdoors as well as plenty of good entertainment. I love all I've heard about Vermont, but I'm hoping for somewhere warmer. Maybe somewhere in north carolina? or west virginia? Does such a place exist?

    Austin, Texas.

Warm weather. Amazing art/music/film scene. Live music capital of the world. Nice hippy crowd. Rivers running everywhere.

    Magical city. :D

Eugene looks pretty good... I had looked into the Portland area at one point...
i think Austin would be awesome but it'd be a little far from my family

does anyone know about Asheville NC?

I've never really felt drawn to new orleans for some reason.
what makes you want to live there? I've never been...

Asheville is a pretty chill city. Beautiful mountains, lots of hippies and otherwise fun, nice people. Pretty much exactly what you described in your first post. MY only problem with it is the air quality and the price of living there.

Oh yeah, but you should definitely come to NC. I can't decide where I want to live either, so I figure I will just recruit people to come here instead of moving elsewhere.

heh. the price of living cant be worse than new york? I've never lived anywhere else but i know it's expensive as hell up here... I kinda figure that almost anywhere I end up is likely to be a bit more affordable. but i could be wrong.

I enjoy Northern BC quite a bit.

I also enjoy not being by a city though.

It would be. Of course, the view out my window overlooks a trailer park.

At least until my mortgage gets approved.
