You will recall that in January 1992 the Supreme Soviet (parliament) of the Soviet Union passed a motion abolishing the Soviet Union and replacing it with a collection of fifteen sovereign republics. Boris Yeltsin presided and approved. Most people in and out of the former Soviet Union would agree that there have been no particularly harmful results of that decision.

Today, following eight years of leadership by George W. Bush, the United States is the major force of imperialism on the planet. By imperialism, I mean a policy of maintaining or expanding an empire beyond one's national borders.

You will also recall that in the 1960's, and in general in the century prior to 1973, the United States enslaved hundreds of thousands of men in a military draft. It was a case of pick up a gun and risk death in battle, or be jailed for five years. (See United States Code, Title 50, Appendix 462. See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_the_United_States#End_of_conscription, .)

In view of this and the fact that the United States is currently waging war in two countries abroad, world peace would be well served by abolition of the United States government while retaining the existing fifty states. Some of these states might use the opportunity to renegotiate land claims made by the native peoples such as the Lakota Sioux. Abolition of the United States might well be accompanied by the abolition of all nuclear weapons held by this government. It is well known that military men consider nuclear weapons to be of little value, particularly against an opponent who has them. (See former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara's memoir, "In Retrospect", Appendix, pp. 342-346.)

Abolition of the United States government and its nuclear weapons would result in continued government of its citizens by fifty states, most of them well armed. However, the resulting lack of cohesion at the level of military policy would reduce the threat posed by Americans to the other nations of the world.

Strictly speaking, this thread may not belong in the Anarchy thread, since I'm proposing the continuation (more or less) of the fifty states as fully functioning governments, together with their subordinate regional and local governments.

States are still too big. It'll just be 50 Americas.

Dirty Dog is on to something, but just abolishing the U.S. is not enough. All countries (i.e., governments) should be abolished for all are repressive of the inherent rights God gave all individuals. The only useful form of anarchy is a religious based anarchy that recognizes a Supreme Being who has given man free-will and inherent rights. The only coercive force that should be recognized as legitimate in this New Order would be the power needed to keep all mankind free from coercion and necessarily orderly. Christian Anarchy seems to me to fill the bill best of all, but not a Christian Anarchy based on established churches. If men wish to congregate that is fine, but they should not impose their desires on others. (I do have trouble with their giving over certain individual rights to established church procedures. It raises the question of whether man is free to be unfree. A conundrum.) A Satanic based anarchy might work just as well, but I do not believe in a Devil. Many devils yes. The men who run governments. I have always looked upon Christ as the most effective anarchist ever. Of course, He was God.

I say dump the current government, and replace them with people who can only serve a cretain number of years:

    Governers: 2-4 year terms
    Senators: 2-6 year terms
    Congressman: 6-2 year terms
    President: 1-6 year term
