My dread are nearly one year old and are syarting to smell a little funky.. This last two weeks ive been in the water a lot because of the beatiful weather here and i am sure thats the cause. But, how can i prevent things from getting worse... Ill try to limit my time in the water and be sure to allow them to dry quicker, but does anyone have any other ideas for me??? thanks folks!

teatree should kill just about anything and the deep cleanse should get anything out
u maybe wore a wool hat when still lil wet? that would do it

just do a good wash and let em dry

u never used wax or anything wright?

if u do the deepp cleanse use a ;llil extra tea tree ans maybe lemoin jiuice and it'll kill any mould or whatever..

ooo yes i second the deep clean.
I have been doing that since the begining of my dreads and everyone comment on how clean and nice smelling they are :D
you definately see the gunk come out too so you know that it works,
I was in the middle east and when I came back I did the deep clean and a crap load of sand came out of my dreads with it!

yeah try some kind of deep cleaning mix, such as ACV or a baking soda mixture.

And are your dreads getting completely dry before you get them wet again?

i try my best to let em dry well, but this last week in N. California (as you know) was HOOOOOOT so i was in the ocean and pools all day long..... just got used to it being wet and took a few mid day siestas with it far from dry. I made for a good cleaning today and even hit a sauna to help em dry faster and the funky smell is almost gone now.

I don't know where you have been swimming in? But seawater and chlorine swimming pool water makes your dreadies smell bad.. so just buy a shampoo which smells nice, wash once or twice and the smell is gone.

I thought the ocean was supposed to be good for the dreadies? I plan on doing a fair bit of swimming this summer, and probably also diving. should be fine as long as I let them dry up nicely before going to bed or putting on a hat or whatever?

the oceans good for TIGHTENING DREADS but then must be rinced out so you dont get a dead fish smell

so whenever you go into the ocean you should rinse the seawater out with fresh water? how thoroughly would you say? I'm assuming you'd still follow normal washing with soap routine, even if you were in the water every day?

i never rinse my hair after swimming in the ocean. in the summer, i dont even shower, i just swim every day or two. ive never had a dead fish smell, or anything like it. my dreads always smell fresh. i guess my beach is just clean...?
to the op, deep cleanse + lots of tea tree is your friend.

ghehe, our sea here is probably dirty :p wahahah, but another thing, my head feels itchy (because of the salt) after swimming in the sea, so washing my locks makes the itch go away.

Sea water is freaking incredible for natural hair, but you have to let it dry properly.

It's the only way to prevent smell; let it dry, and make sure it's dry before your put any hat on.

yeah, the salt water is really drying so i usually rinse off a couple of times a month and moisturize my hair and skin.
actually, i wear a wool tam over wet hair in the winter cause its so freaking cold when its snowing outside and you have wet dreads. i think the reason i dont have problems is that i only get my hair wet every couple of weeks in the winter so it has plenty of time to dry out after the first day or two under a hat.
