I'm curious about everyone's choices in life. I always come across the stereotype of hippy as a college drop out. I went to an all girls Catholic High School (yea, it was horrible) and I had no idea any other option existed but college. I got into NYU on a scholarship, left for the big city ... and dropped out in less than one year. I was always bored at school, though I received high grades effortlessly (hence the boredom). In college, I realized I didn't need to be bored any more. I was over 18, and my path in life was my own. So, I went on to travel, backpack around the world, hold a variety of jobs, learn on my own, read loads of books, explore libraries, etc. Now, I'm pursuing writing as a "career" and in the mean time I support myself running a small baking business out of my home. I'm my own boss, and can do what I want. I don't make a huge amount of money, but I have no debt and it's more than enough for my simple life. How many of you chose the alternative path? Did you go to college? Did you skip it altogether? Did you drop out? Do you regret your choice or are you happy? Just curious. :detective
How about those of us that haven't dropped out or graduated yet? No plans to drop out obviously, or I'dve done it by now..
In school I did 5th form, skipped 6th form, and then manipulated the system and completed 7th form and graduated. Now I'm at university studying for a 3 year degree. I wouldnt say I'm enjoying it, but I'm not really hating it either. Will I stay the full three years and complete it? We'll see.
Im in college...its waaaay to easy(super bored with it) but its the only way I can teach, and thats my passion.
Ah, I forgot to include that option - those of you still in school. Guess that obligatory other will have to cover it! I was also curious because I actually find I'm in the minority. When I meet older hippies, there are more who did not attend college. But, in the younger crowd, I am the minority. Although, this may also have to do with the fact that 50 years ago the whole "you MUST have a degree to do this job" wasn't as prevalent. I always knew I wanted to write ... and all my favorite writers were college drop outs. So, it was a natural path, lol.
i completed my first year of college, but was kicked out because of bad grades i took online classes at a community college and now im' in the process of getting back in to the college that i was kicked out of
i completed school all the way thru, with good grades. did almost a year of uni and then dropped out. i lost all direction and had no idea what i wanted to do
I dropped out before "O" levels, emigrated to America and tried to drop out of the U.S. Army but they wouldn't let me. I succesfully dropped out of college tho. Later I tried to drop out of life a couple of times without success which is just as well because I really think spirits enjoy the extra dimensions that physical reality provides.
And what exactly would I do with more money? I have enough for everything I need, plus a little extra. I'm all about going for the passion: pursuing that which makes you most happy. For me, it's writing. Not teaching writing, not freelance writing, but fiction novel writing. A degree is not needed for that - just a good manuscript. In the mean time, I get to do the other thing I love: bake. If your passion is to pursue lots of money ... good luck. Just keep in mind this is not everyone's goal in life.
I completed 3 years of college, pursued three different majors, & attended three different colleges. If I had stayed in school, it probably would have taken 3 more years to complete anything. There were a lot of reasons why I "took a break" from school. I won't go into them, but I'm not willing to go back unless I find something that's REALLY important to me, because I don't want to waste my time & money on something just so that I can have a piece of paper. The way I see it, I can always learn what I need to learn from sources other than school. Peace & Blessings, Moon Beam
yeah nothin wrong with droppin out i droped out of college cos i just wanna backpack the world and volunteer alot no need to waste time gettin a degree 4 that
I quit high school a few months ago, because I was bored to death and wanted to take control of my own education and learn by living. Now I'm a happy unschooler. I prefer the term "rose out" instead of "dropped out;" I don't feel like I dropped out of anything, but instead jumped into the big beautiful world.
That's a good point..... I hate it when my family says I dropped out, & I don't say it, because it really is a negative thing. I don't feel at all bad about not completing my degree... I know I'm a lot more happy than most of my college-going friends!!
I like that - "rose out." I, too, do not feel as if I dropped anything. I totally wish I had been home schooled while growing up. I wasted so much time in school. Seriously! I'm a total bookworm, and love to read, but school interfered with that, lol. And I always got into trouble for reading in class. In school, I never got to learn what I was most interested in, and I never got to learn as in depth as I would have liked. Until, of course, I decided enough was enough, and decided to forget about college. Especially with my passion (writing) ... the only school I need is called LIFE.
^^ I totally know what you mean! We used to have desks in grade 4 where you could keep your stuff in, and I was always caught with a book hidden where the teacher couldn't see it unless she walked behind me...The only thing my teacher complained to my parents about too
