Travelling to Italy next year and am very much looking forward to Rome, but I'm hearing vastly different accounts of it, some people love and other people saying it's dirty, crowded and filled to the brim with pick pockets and it's best to spend as little time there as possible. The bad accounts are coming mainly from older people who went in tour groups (gosh - you weren't expecting pick pockets to target you when your in a tour group?) and the younger people seem to be very positive about it! I'd love to hear other peoples experiences of Rome and how long you think we should stay.
I am not agree with you wiccan, I heard too much about rome, My advice is to go there, rome is very beauitiful place to visit... off the topic: You are looking so beautiful
Im off to Rome in a couple months. Im pretty pumped. My sister says that it smells bad a lot of the time, but there are so many amazing things to see that the good definitely outweighs the bad.
First, yes, there is plenty of negative things about Rome. There are a lot of pickpockets. I actually threw an old gypsy woman on the floor, because they were trying to rob me, and started screaming and cursing at her in Spanish. It's close enough to Italian that she would have understood. Plus, words like puta and the facial expressions don't change. Rome is dirty, but there are a lot of beautiful things to see and old historic ruins. I highly recommend going to Rome. The first time I went to Rome (I've been twice) i went on a bike tour of the city. At first this seems like lunacy, because the Romans drive so crazy, but it actually turned out to be pretty safe, and highly recommended. You also need to see the Coliseum, the Vatican and the forum. The ruins and the art are not to be missed. But always, ALWAYS be careful. Walk with several other people, carry a small bag under your arm or a small wallet in your front pocket. Don't carry a large purse or a wallet in your back pocket, easy to steal these. If you have to sleep on a train or somewhere public like that, chain your bag to yourself, or wrap the straps around your legs or body. I also recommend Cinque Terre. I stayed in Riomaggiore, which was beautiful!! Florence is very nice as well. At Pompeii it was very sad to see beautifully preserved condition of all the houses of all those people that died in the volcano.
Well Sweetheart.. welcome to Italy! try to get your nose used to that cause the stench is all over the same.. and probably Rome is one of the least-smelly cities.. If your sister's nose is so sensitive.. well.. she should definately avoid hanging around Naples...( unless she wears a gasmask..) they've been having few troubles with garbage recollection recently..
Are you kidding me? don't listen to anyone saying don't go. You MUST go to Rome. It's a must see place full of life, history, culture. It's so amazing. I loved Rome and all of Italy so much that i've been twice. Obviously don't get ur expectations too high, as in the city is somewhat dirty but it's so fun to be there. Go to the spanish steps and just sit on the steps and absorb the fact that you are there. Go to the trevi fountain and of course see the coliseum. You don't need to do much of the touristy stuff but the city itself is so alive. I would suggest doing 3 nights in Rome that's a good enough time to see what u need to. enjoy it!!
Yep. Best advice is to see it for yourself. All places have their ups and downs so why not take the chance to go?
Rome is the most amazing city I've ever seen. Every one should go there at some point in there lives.
I've just come back from Rome and I loved it. I'm surprised to hear stories of Pickpockets, especially since I spent most of my time with my purse in full sight! One thing I do recommend is NEVER start an argument with a Police officer, particularly A woman police officer. Our coach driver learned that the hard way
I lived in Rome for 5 months. I lived in the area near the vatican. Its not so horrible for crime as long as you are careful. Be aware of your surroundings. (aka dont listen to your ipod while ignoring your purse on the metro or bus) But you will be fine. DEF learn as much italian as you can before you go. DONT date roman men (maybe there are exceptions) THEY are DISGUSTING PIGS and GO to Scholars loungE! on via plebiscito near piazza venezia. Its the irish pub all the american college kids go to and I met some really hot english guys there!!
when i was living in Rome, my sis came over. She went down to naples to visit a friend. Now i had been down there a bunch of times. But when she went they were on a mafia-induced trash strike. She said it was the smelliest city on earth
Even though I am a guy, I am going to have to go ahead and say that is pretty good advice. But I kinda got the impression that it's not just the Roman men, but all the Italian guys. Florencian men are supposed to be fine (outside of my realm of expertise, so I dunno) but I found them just as arrogant. Girls were nice, though. FYI. Coupla Italian girls invitied us up to Daddy's farm up in the Tuscan hills.
