don't worry about swimming in the ocean soon after backcombing. most of the knots are gonna fall out anyways from the backcombing, but more will form, and salt water helps that.

i wouldn't do too many ponytails with brand newly dreaded hair, because it'll just not dread at the point where you're putting it into the ponytail. but if you do it on occasion it's ok. just don't tighten the band too tight, leave it fat and poofy and you'll be ok! :)

swimming in the ocean is great for dreads, especially if they're new. The salt in the water will tighten them. as long as you keep on top of separating them, like ripping them and what not, they shouldn't form congos. that will take months to fully happen, just make sure you rip. you can even mix salt water and a squirt of lemon juice in a spray bottle to spritz on dreadlings to help 'em tighten up. but, hey, as long as you're in the water, that should take care of that.
but remember, when you swim, let you're dreads dry before going back in the water, wearing a hat, or tying them up and such. if you don't, this will cause the moisture inside the dreadies to be trapped and can cause mold. for instance, don't go get your hair wet and wear a hat expecting it to dry your hair. that will only grow mold. especially wool hats.
and make sure you DIDNT USE WAX, right!?
and for the ponytails, yeah man, go ahead and tie 'em up. as long as they're not soaked, because that could attribute to the mold, again. but tying them up never gave me any trouble.
    and remember. no wax. please.
    happy dreading :]

alright well this is how today went i woke up early i put rubberbands at the roots so the dreads dont join together in the salt water...i jumped in the ocean swam for a bit got sea sick the usual...on the way back it rain so that wet the dreads even more and after we cleaned the boat i took a shower...i just rinsed the dreads with the shower water i didnt shampoo it or anything now there in a towel drying off but my new question is, was what i did bad for my dreads or did it help them?.....my plans is to let my hair dry and then take off the rubberbands and palm roll for a bit...also i shower mostly ever day should i wet the dreads when i shower or do i got to keep them dry

yeah man, they should be fine as long as you allow them to dry completely after getting wet. and I wouldn't wrap them up in a towel for long, because it seems like that would encourage mold, and I don't think u want that. you should prolly take those rubber bands off as well, it can weaken the root.

just remember, dreads should be low maintenance. the less time you spend thinking about them, the better they will turn out.

yeah definitely don't use rubber bands. palm rolling really isn't necessary, but i guess there's no harm in doing it if you're bored or something. and i don't know how fast your dreads dry, but washing or wetting them every day seems like a bit too much. if they're consistently wet, this could also encourage mold. you definitely can wet them every day ONLY if you give them time to fully and thoroughly dry beforehand. if they dry in the 24 hour waiting period between wetting them, then that's fine. but just make sure that they're not wet like...24/7....because that will encourage....dare i say again....mold.
and listen LiquidSoul, remember that dreads are verry low maintenance. take it easy.
