    Hey guys,

Anyhow, I don't want to be rude... and think maybe I'm just not in a great mood these days... but does anyone else almost find it insulting to get invited to a bbq? Last night, we were invited to one, and it seems they waited for us to show up before they started cooking sasages over the fire using sticks... for some reason, I just felt like they are trying to show us that they are cool meat eaters...

anyhow, like I said... it has been bothering me since, but, maybe I'm just in a bad mood over other things... so... I tried to be quiet, and not say much... but lateley I feel there is a lot of "unsaid" actions being made around us... andnow with BBQ season aproaching, I see a tough summer ahead... maybe I should just stop going...

    Anyone else face this?

    Peace

    No.
I don't find it insulting to get invited to a bbq .
For one, I am not insulted by other peoples choice to eat meat.Thats their deal, I don't care

    Also,
I do know people that just don't understand that my family doesn't eat meat- and realize they aren't trying to be disrespectful by not having any way to serve me.. they are just ignorant.

I am also known to take the more active approach, I'll bring my own veggie burgers- or riblets- or just some extra sides to the bbq if I know the likelihood of it all being flesh cooked in flesh is high.

Now, If i did think my "friends" where purposely disrespecting me being veg- I would leave, and I would have no qualms about avoiding their next bbq.

I went to a BBQ last month. Besides the usual chicken & burgers & ribs, someone brought summer squash, zucchini, bell peppers & potatoes to slice up and cook on the grill.

Who says that u can only cook meat at a BBQ?

Other people brought fruit salad, potato salad, chips & beer.

    Hey guys,

Yea, ok, I should probably make a few things clear-er... The BBQ is with my family... they have always hated the fact that my wife and I are veg... it made them all quite angry in the past... They use to wave meat in front of us... and make rude comments about mmmmm... you need to try this... yum, it died for my pleasure...

Anyhow, I"m not sure if the BBQ'ers had any ill intentions, and perhaps my mood was bad too... (lots of stress)... but I just saw these same people cooking sausages over a fire (using sticks)... it just made me feel quite shitty...

I know what you guys are saying... and I know there was probably no ill-intent.... but none the less... I still felt it was wrong...

To me, it just seemed as though they enjoy flaunting their carnie ways to me... actually, now that I read the posts above... I don't think I would have felt the same if it was not my family...

Anyhow, maybe I'm just being cranky, suspicious, or whatever... and as a hippie, I know I need to let the past go... just last night... it just kinda got to me again...

Thanks for the good words, I really needed to hear that... I think its time to smoke a fatty, go for a walk, clear my head, and get back to reality ;)

    peace guys

put a few chunks of marinated tofu in a stick and join them.
bring satay/ peanut sauce and you might have to fight for your own food.
I brought veggie burgers and skewers of marinated tofu to a grilling session & people who were not fans of tofu, or had not tried it, were impressed. The chunks were partially cooked in a frying pan before skewering.
I also made homemade pomegrante bbq sauce, new potato salad (boiled new/red potatoes, quartered with a vinegar/oil dressing,) hummus and a fruit salad.
(just to clarify: to barbecue is to cook over flames in an enclosed space (cover on) with sauces or rubs. Grilling is cooking over a fire)

My mom likes to enjoy BBQ season too. It bothered me for quite a bit, but I've taken to bringing my own seasoning & portabella mushroom caps with when we go to my parents house, and my dad is all too eager to grill them for me if I'll share :) Even my son, a dyed-in-the-wool carnivore gave up his hamburger for a mushroom cap last week!

Bringing your own side helps too... but I always have to bring PLENTY to share because everyone has to try what I've got!
    love,
    mom

I'm invited to a barbeque and I mentioned I would bring vegetable skewers. Everyone wants vegetable skewers.

The main course at any BBQ isn't the meat. It's the company of others.

    Don't overlook this simple pleasure.

^^ I think we should all print that out and put it on our walls.
    Great thought, Xenon

people love it when I come to bbqs because they get to try the yummy food I bring. I usually make hummus and veggie burgers (grilled seperately of course!). I think it is rude if you wouldn't go because they eat meat. Everyone has the choice to eat the way they want and that should be respected.
