Saranac makes some decent beers. I've never had their scotch ale, though. They make an excellent seasonal imperial IPA. Their black forest beer is also very good.
scottish ales and scotch ales are different. there are some good scotch ales out there. i'm intrigued and very much wish to try more, but i've had mixed results. i do have some respect for mcewans. its good for a dessert beer, if you limit yourself to one. its not for session drinking at all. i sometimes find it cloying, sometimes just shy of cloying. if i want an intensely sweet and rich beer with virtually no hop bitterness and a touch extra alcohol, mcewans is nice on occasion. in general i find it too over-the-top and untouchably sweet, though....i very, very rarely buy it. but then i've also had founder's dirty bastard scotch ale which i found way too bitter. mcewans may be too sweet, but SOME sweetness can be good! i've also had skullsplitter which i loved, and thought was the best and most accessible of the three i've tried. people i know who dont like beer in general or dont like dark beer often enjoy mcewans. probably because its close to the beer equivalent of soda pop in terms of sweetness.
