Last year, some friends in New Orleans invited us to a concert by Colombian Salsa supergroup Niche. Since I'm always looking for new music, we accepted and were very pleasently surprised. It's a large orchestra (some 14 or 15 musicians), heavy on the brass, but with a very soft complex rythm fronted by a fast and furious piano. I did not understand the lyrics, but my friend told me they weren't important, that the beat was what mattered. Since then, I've been doing some research on the Net, and I've found a very complex world of music that was completely alien to me. Thousands of bands from all over the world (even the U.S. and as far as Japan), play this type of music. It's very happy party music, but also good to chill. They have many different styles, bands from trios to large orchestras, amazing. It's like discovering a whole new world. Anybody into Salsa here?
yeah, salsa is cool. i used to despise it!!! but yeah it was mainly cos i couldnt dance!!! I just try to follow the rythm and voila! i guess i've got it in my blood.. I've heard about Niche, but to be honest with you i dont listen to salsa at all. just at nightclubs, where i used to hang out with latin people. salsa el ritmo sabroson!
OOOh salsa! The music is so dancy! Good chip dip too. Yet I only heard some on the radio and i think its salsa. haha but what are some good salsa artists anyways? Maybe ill download some of their songs!
I love love LOVE salsa! I fell in love with in Barcelona last spring, where I met this guy who taught me to dance salsa. We spent so many wonderful nights at different salsa clubs... fun times! I was so sad to go back to Finland, coz we don't have ANY salsa clubs there, but now I'm living in UK and there are a lot of them here. Yay. But anyway... My favourite salsa artists are Gipsy Kings (naturally!), Celia Cruz, Jerry Rivera, Bobby Valentin and Gloria Estefan. Ohhh now I feel like going to dancing...!
I recomend the following: Africando Afro-Cuban All Stars Buena Vista Social Club (it's actually son, the predessor of salsa) peace
Some quite extraordinary Salsa artists that I've found: Ruben Blades Willie Colon Niche Ricardo Ray India Celia Cruz All of their music is great dance music, but I've found it's also perfect to chill out. Specially Niche and Ruben Blades, which tend to be a bit slower than the others.
I like watching salsa, but can't do it myself. It was my friend's hen night a few months back and we went to this place called Havana in London. It was a Mexican restaurant/club and everyone was doing salsa. There were also professional salsa dancers there teaching people like me who couldn't do it! Even though I was crap, it was fun especially whilst pissed!
Yes I recommend it! You can sit down and have a meal first and then (providing you're not too full) go and have a dance. It's a great place to people watch.
I was at a Jerry Rivera concert a week ago...danced my ASS off! I love salsa, learned to dance it in a local nightclub in Guatemala, and loved it since then.
