Who is your favourite American artist/band? Just curious to know...

And I also wanted to put in some props for Bob Dylan. :)

I can't pick just one, so I'll give my top five:

    1) The Velvet Underground
    2) The 13th Floor Elevators
    3) Spirit
    4) Television
    5) Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention

Bob all the way. I dunno, theres a lot of people from the us. I guess I'd like to *thank* all the bands keeping american music alive, like bluegrass artists.

Zappa, Beefheart, Sonic Youth, At The Drive-In, Flaming Lips... most bands I listen to are American without especially sounding like it. I think I just prefer the accent, English people can't sing.

Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsies, sadly a very short-lived band.
Return to Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra The two top Fusion bands in the world.
Happy the Man Highly underrated Prog-Rock band form the seventies, as good as anything Europe ever sent our way.
Minutemen Now, this was really good Garage-Punk, also very short-lived and underrated.
Little Feat Top musicians having a lot of fun with their music. Also highly and undeservedly underrated. Everyone should give Little Feat a try.

And the list would go on...

Hey Celeste! I'm glad somebody else here likes Little Feat! It's hard to find Lowell George fans out there these days.

    Mahavishnu Orchestra...

Composed of SOME Americans...BUT Mahavishnu John McLaughlin is a BRIT... One of the more amazing guitarists of all time, but he's an Englishman, my friend...Since McLaughlin was the Brains, the Brawn, and the Beauty of Mahavishnu, I say that that band qualifies as an "Import..." Not accurate for the sake of this thread, unfortunately, but a great reference all the same.

You still get MAD PROPS for listing Mahavishnu, though...

The current BEST American Band is...

    WILCO...

    IMO...

Jeff Tweedy is a poet/lyricist with Dylanesque talents... Amazing...
