i'm suprised i didn't see a thread about this already.. but can you believe this year's line-up??? i've been to Roo in '04, '05, and '07- and i've always been a believer, but after waiting so long to see what kind of amazing line-up they'd have this year, i was incredibly disappointed. i mean, how can you go from TOOL to Metallica? Kanye West? jeezus.. thank god they're having Rothbury this year. it totally saved the summer festy scene for the east coast!
personally I love the lineup. It takes a lot more research and is decidedly less "Jammy" buy I still love it and know I am going to have a blast. Roo is about musical exploration not bands you've seen a thousand times for me anyway. There are other festies for that type of thing.
I think we were all scared to post it Some of us almost got into a little trouble for bashing last years line up, within the main Roo thread. Of course I made my comment in this years thread anyway. It's a pop festival. That's cool, if you're into radio stuff. Just not for me.
Radio stuff? How often do you hear battles on the radio. How often do you even hear mastodon on the radio? Yonder? Zappa Plays Zappa, Gogol Bordello, Levon Helm Solo, Bisco? Yea, some of the headliners are heard on the radio but I dont go to a fest solely for the headliners. I dont know about you though.
Rothbury looks amazing, but it's just so damn expensive. The super deluxe VIP tickets look amazing though. Definitely better than any other festival that I've come across. at 1500 they damn sure better be. Anyways back to bashing roo. Ashley Capps and Superfly have done probably the best job of biting the hand that feeds them that i have EVER seen. I hear a pretty loud and clear "Piss off Hippies, we got your cash already" surrounding this whole stupid affair. It wouldn't piss me off so bad if i hadn't put in the work year after year as a volunteer to make that festival happen. They sent me an Email the other day asking if i wanted to work this year. I responded with 5 words "clean up your own mess". Oh well though, at least wakarusa's keepin it real this year. That's where i'll be, and maybe Rothbury.
Yeah, exactly. I wouldn't be so upset if they weren't clearly saying "fuck you" to the whole scene that made Roo what it was in the first place. I'm talking about the various different hippy crowds.. from Deadheads to Phishheads to psychedelic freaks in general. ThEy are what made Bonnaroo into the modern-day Woodstock that it was, not old-school Metallica and Pearl Jam fans. Not only are they attempting to shift the scene away from the psychedelic-minded hippies, but they're attempting to bring back early 90's scenes that probably belong in the early 90's. Pearl Jam and Metallica (not to mention Kanye West) are some of the most UN-psychedelic artists I can imagine. I mean honestly, what the fuck? As a prediction, I wouldn't be suprised if the change in music style will make it possible for our first Roo riots.. Woodstock '99 all over again.
most of the heads I know figured out about the power of music through metal and similar. I know a buncha kids who are in the transition stage from the raw fury to spiritual vibe. As always, if you don't like a line up, DON'T GO. Find something that sings to YOUR soul. Roo 08 thread: http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=285550
It's best we cut our losses now while Bonnaroo is in the limelight. The last thing the jamband scene needs is to be associated with the mtv crowd that will use the festival as another thing to exploit and ruin. Now that music festivals have been turned into a business "get as many people in as we can fit" instead of providing a haven for free minds, no festival is safe from the douche bags that will attend. I cast my vote for an underground festival in '09.
i'm kind of down for a show that is not orientated towards one type of music. I've been to festivals where I feel as if i was attending some kind of conformist group rally. i just got back from summercamp and noticed there were so little heads there and the atmosphere has just changed a lot. a younger generation of kids who thinks that dressing up like "neo hippies", and running around trying to think of ridiculous things to say to people who are not hippieish enough is ridiculous. not to metion who the hell were the lips fooling, I can believe they said that was the greatest festival ever. they were barely singing, and the crowd did'nt even know the words to "vaseline". i can understand why there is no heads there.
maybe it was the molly, but the lips show was a truly amazing experience for me. Then i went to see sasha and digweed afterward and it was like i stepped back 10 years into a steaming pile of PLUR. What a great night that was for me (if you're experience of it was bad i'm sorry). In defense of such dissent it was great molly, but even watching the show on Youtube now I still feel the energy of that night.
Roo is way to mainstream and big. It is more of a hassle to get there and back. I prefer small festivals.
Oh don't get me wrong, I had an amazing time at Bonnaroo last year, during TOOL and then seeing one of String Cheese's last shows together... it was truly magical and I'll never forget it. I am just pretty disappointed with this year's line-up. They could have gotten sooo much better talent with the money I'm sure they have to work with... It just shows you they are trying to appeal to the widest audience possible this year, which will make the festival worse in my opinion.
i kinda have a rule for myself if i cant bring beer to the stage i wont go. roo i feel like im in a fish bowl and people are poking me with sticks. i love small ass fests by sunday everyone is familier with everyone elce. even langerado is getting too big. searching peoples cars what a fucken joke they do it because we go and let them.
But like... what's the point of getting upset about it? The people who run the festival can do whatever they want, and if you don't like it that's fine. I don't see the point in whining. By Roo doing this they are getting people to attend a festival who never would have went if it just stayed the same. And if even a small fraction of this new wave of festival goers stumbles in on a phil set, or umphreys, or les, or yonder, and they realize what it's all about and get 'turned on' if you will, then it is a success in my opinion. It seems to me that Roo is tricking 'normal' people to come to a music festival and in a way, sacrificing it's own reputation and credibility in order to bring more people into the light. I mean, it's all about your attitude and how you look at it. There's a positive side of everything, and everyone being negative towards Roo because of what they're doing is just a bit immature and annoying. -Mike
Oh. You were talking to me. It took me a second to get that. In that case........ hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha. -Mike
