It's a bit hard to pick '5' as it depends on my mood really but,
I'll go for these Top 5ive 'Angels': -

    I feel....
1> Karen Carpenter was the most distinctive sound
2> Eva Cassidy had the most Haunting and sensitive voice
3> Mama Cass had the best pitch and flow
4> Janis Joplin had the most Powerful Strength
5> Dusty Springfield was perhaps the most 'underrated'(?) singer

On a separate note... you people are insane. Janis Joplin does not have a good voice... it could probably be used as a psychological weapon. It is a unique voice for sure, yet... honestly... common...

She's not part of a band , but IMO Whitney Houston has the best female voice I've ever heard. Off the top of my head, I can't even think of anyone else...

Granted I don't know many female singers, and all the ones I do know are from the 60s and 70s. So here it goes. . .

    1. Janis Joplin, Big Brother and the Holding Company

    2. Grace Slick, Jefferson Airplane

    3. Whatever lady sings backup vocals for Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album - she was awesome!

    4. Mary Travers, Peter, Paul & Mary

I unfortunately don't have a number 5. I can't think of anyone else that fits for me.

i don't know about greatest but my favorites (in no particular order are)

    Kelley Deal -
I personally think she sounds better than her sister Kim but one of the great things about the Breeders is the vocal harmonies like Here No More off of the new album,
also her album Go to the Sugar Altar is one of the greatest albums ever

    Siouxsie Sioux -
she has a great voice, the Banshees are one of the best bands

    Grace Slick -
Another beautiful voice, and I love the vocal interactions on the Airplane albums

    Kristen Hersh -
the harshness of her voice just makes the throwing muses awesome

i can't really think of a solid fifth singer but some others i like are
    Yoshimi P-We
    Kim Gordon
    the girls from Shonen Knife
    Patti Smith
    Zooey Deschanel
    Cat Power
    and
    Nellie Mckay
