we gave up on opening our land to family after over 10 years of doing so. it is simply not worth the effort that it takes to accommodate someone whom says they are willing to help out around here but when they get here they insist on being on rainbow time, wont work unsupervised, wont do the jobs that need to be done, refuse to abide by the no drug policy etc.etc. it was a very hard decision to make but quite frankly we feel it is easier to just do it ourselves than open our home to any and all and time after time wind up with unmotivated people with no work ethic here and then we have to tell them they are no longer welcome here.. a working farm takes a huge amount of effort to keep going with very little reward other than the satisfaction of knowing you dont have to rely on others for your food and shelter.. i am not saying everyone that has come through here has been what we consider slackers, but i will say, well over 75% of them have been.. you cant expect to contribute equally to a working farm when you climb out of bed at noon and get ready to start working at 1 or 2 in the afternoon. especially not during growing season and it would seem that that was what the vast majority of people who came through here would do... on the subject of dogs,, everyones dogs are well behaved,,till they attack our animals.. if i had a dollar for every time i heard "im so sorry he/she has never attacked anything before",,id have me a big old sack of dollars.. therefore, the rare times we do allow anyone here anymore ,,there animals are not welcome,or they MUST be kept on a leash AT ALL TIMES!.. then people bitch about that,,but out of all the animals we have lost here due to other peoples dogs,,not once have we been compensated for that loss.. so that rule will for ever more be strictly enforced... i guess in the end what im saying is,, its been our experience that it aint as simple as some think to create a permanent rainbow habitat due to the very nature of a LOT of rainbows.. on the land ownership and the native americans,, WTF???? umm the indians may not have used the term "owner" but they sure as hell did consider areas to be there hunting grounds, there waters,etc.. and they did fight to the death to defend there lands...that statement was not thought out....
Unfortunately, people and societies never change unless they face crisis- a big and collective swift kick in the butt. We have it too easy- there is no reason to change. The work ethic is going to hell, and there is still plenty of apathy out there. This is a situation that will do much to bring about the necessary crisis, which I think is coming very soon.
All I can do is roll my eyes at a shallow feller like yerself. But for the sake of generosity I'll answer your questions. Yes, I'm looking for folks (the point of this thread I created). Do I have land? No, hoping to find some folks who can throw some money together and BUY the land...or join ranks with those who already do. Where am I going to "lead"? I don't consider myself a leader in any way. Maybe an organizer of some kind, though. Yourself? Not much? I didn't think so. Go slack off somewhere.
I'm glad you said that, cuz it was just on the tip of my tongue! I sense the main psychological problem going on with most Rainbows is the lack of a sense of urgency. We live in utmost urgent times, and it's time that people, ESPECIALLY Rainbows, who are at the forefront of human evolution, begin to understand this and act accordingly.
I see another fantasy discussion.. My mistake I was talking about reality, have fun maybe you’ll find a few young dreamers to play your Internet fantasy game. Maybe you should go to Wyoming and wander around a few regionals afterwards if you really want to learn how it is. Pfff good luck dude.. I sure folks will be throwing money at you. Hahaha The internet is full of clowns I love it… keep it coming.
just out of curiosity,,pahana,,how much cash do you have to contribute towards a piece of property at this very moment? 10 grand? 20 grand? i mean viable land for a sustainable life aint cheap(nor is turning poor land into sustainable land),,they just reassessed our property at 260,000 dollars,,and thats fair market value..(yes that hurt bad,,last assessment was 92,,we were livin cheap) anyone thats been here will tell you,,it aint cause of the house thats on it,improvements or what they call "accessories" (sheds, fencing, driveway improvements, etc)was a large part of it.taxed for your blood sweat and tears,,aint america great??. lol i mean even if you get cheap raw land,,whos buying the tools, whos buying the fencing, sheds, equipment for water supply, seeds for a crop, etc. etc.. so great your lookin for like minded folks,,find a cheap chunk of land large enough with the proper resources to sustain say,,10 people, then you allow enough capital after land purchase to purchase, tools and the essentials to sustain yourself till your first harvest.. just how much cash do you think each person will have to have? or are ya just gonna do like the rest of america an go in debt for it???
or perhaps you'll get lucky and find just the right folks. Yes it's hard, and challenging, but i think it's possible. In fact i have done it. Never perfect, but i have a real good life for me and my family. It is true that you will lose some along the way, but if you train hard and play hard you might win a few also. besides we'll be dead soon, and you will either not need this world(s cash) or you will not need this world. Either way you wont need this world; unless you need to use your reputation in this worldto get into 'heaven', then you might wish you had a few good deeds on your record.
rasta,,when you "i have done it" that would imply that you much as i purchased land on your own correct?
I refuse to move onto the Reservation! Thanks, but I'd rather stay in my own space here in South Knoxville and make life miserable for the crack heads.
Sometimes I wonder what motivates some of these "naysayers" on this forum... it's as though they are here primarily to provoke negativity. They are best ignored. Anyway rastapatch, I got your email and have already replied to it. Thanks a bunch my friend!
Now this is the perfect example of an unnecessary reply! Just a waste of space this is! Thanks for sharing anyway, I guess.
on the contrary HB, I am one of those who traveled from rainbow farm to rainbow farm working hard, until i was recognized as a hard working sober individual; thereby becoming a valuable commodity. I am committed to the concept of 'what would we do if we had to? what would we do to have what we really want, need, and deserve?' After decades of intentional poverty, working for free, i was given the option of becoming the farm manager at the oldest organic farm in colorado; and yes it is a 'rainbow oriented' farm. I truly respect your opinions on farming, america, the economy and the coming crisises (is that crisi for plural?). I agree with you on most everything, and appreciate that you are usually fairly polite.
It's important to not confuse the naysayers with folks who are trying to give advice on what they know. Forgive folks if they are sharing advice on a potentially difficult subject. One of the best ways to succeed is to find all the problems that went wrong with the last try, and try to avoid them. On the other hand there are MANY folks who respond to every post no matter if they have something to add as a proposal, or any advice to give. They have too much time on their hands; anybody who responds to every post should be outside farming. Forgive them, for they have already lost, and cannot usually be fixed. Decadence and addiction have made them unable to fight the good fight. Ignoring problems, even other peoples problems, will not save the world, or your spirit. By being compassionate and understanding (not gullible) we gain the respect and unity of our peers, and excel in our cause. There is a limited amount of time, spend it working, not bickering. If we want to discuss a proposal we should stick to the question, advice, and proposal, not digressing about peripheral noises.
i've been having a go at the dream . to start it i got a free farm space and campspot . if i had to rent some undeveloped land it wouldn't cost much anyway . i just go the easy way whenever i can . of all i know about farming it's all for the best to do more thinking than work . so for now , i guess i do it on my own since it's an inventor's sort of approach and to figure stuff out i got to do it my way . it's going well . this is my second season here . if it don't hail-out or something my harvest should be 10 times that of last year . saving most of that good organic seed and thinking just how fat i can do it next year . it's possible too that my style will produce alot of money . i got a thingy invented ready for production and marketing . i can even do that on my own pretty much . well , somehow at least something of the dream becoming real i'll share . i always do . rainbow love makes me easy . the seeds are in the ground , i sing them to grow and peace to the rabbits . in few days i'm on the trail to wyoming . back to iowa in september for the harvest . so you see what i got going ? simple living . free food . an easy-to-make thingy that can be traded in a world market . free to be on the trail and find again wild little children in the woods and the heartsong of the circle . the gathering of the dream has it's own time and of no desparation . urgency ? ha! only devotion .
A lot of us have tried this and a lot of us have spent years of our lives trying to make this similar thing work we are just discussing what went wrong and why it didn’t work. Why do you think that there isn’t already a permanent rainbow gathering? You are on here talking about buying land with no money, seriously you sound like some kid who can’t afford an apartment but you are talking about buying a $150,000 spread. It is like someone who can’t afford a second hand bike talking about buying a new sports car. Have you been around rainbows much? A lot of times it can be hard to get a few hundred dollars in the magic hat for food, and your talking about a couple hundred grand for homestead acreage? You evade any kind of real questions that would make you thread realistic.. How much cash do you have and how much do people need to contribute? Some of us were trying to have a serious conversation about it and you just attack and kind of comment that doesn’t fit into your fantasy. You really need to work on your people skills if you want to be an "organizer".
just to clarify.... to be honest,, the reason i ask is that we are still looking for a LONG TERM/permanent partner here, one that is willing to suffer through the day to day hardships that farming sometimes brings.. it has come to our attention that most if not all want equal say from day one.. we feel that the only way for us to be able to justify someone having equal say from day one,due to the fact we have put 17 years of labor and cash into this property to make it what it is,is to have someone buy there equal say from day one.. it wasnt meant to be a "nay sayer" comment.. pahana made the statement "get together and buy land,or find someone with land".. well we have land and are willing to have the right individual buy into what we have here and become partners with us.. that is the only way at this point we would consider a long term agreement with someone here.. but it would seem that perhaps pahana was just talking out his ass...
Hey wandering....lost here...just put a down on the bus...gonna pick it up after the gathering. The vision is becoming a reality. Transition time. Peace
You make some good points Zihger, and I value them...honestly. Sure, it is a FANTASY of mine to make this DREAM happen. But how to realities manifest themselves? They start off as ideas and people work at them to turn them into realities. As far as the cash situation, it's true that I don't have much and am beginning to save. We live in a capitalist society (which may turn out the be the DOWNFALL of society) and it's a huge disgrace that such enormous pricetags are put on land to own. It's a sacriledge, really. So I suppose it's folks like rasta_patch who we need to depend on because they've already done the leg-work for folks like me who desperately want out of consumer culture. So maybe a good idea is to turn already-existing communes into more Rainbow oriented settings rather than starting new ones from scratch. There are already many that exist today. Perhaps a good idea is for folks like us to reach out to them and to join hands in a common goal of universal brotherhood and cooperation. Land is too expensive and the greed of corporate Earth is devouring the possibilities of starting up new communities such as the ones I've proposed. Maybe the only alternative is to find ones that already exist and thrive and to try and unite them with the Rainbow cause of peace and spiritual unity. As for my people skills, it's true that mine aren't great. But that stems from growing up in the mainstream world where the illusion of seperation is treated as rock-solid gospel. I haven't had the priviledge of growing up around peaceniks and Rainbow warriors. Maybe it's not too late? Rasta, I sent you an email today. I should have my cell phone back up very shortly now.
Thanks for the nod bro, but i must point out that there are many good folks who have also busted a gut, and have found little niches to work on. Sorta like spokes on a wheel. I also appreciate that you have entered into conversation early in your manifestation. I believe it helps momentum to have a network, and a dialog. As for your people skill, i think you have a lot of potential. Stick to the point, be positive, listen to advice, and try not to sound corny. As far as why there are not rainbow communities, it is largely because rainbow is undefined (or should be). It is not even true that rainbow has "a cause for peace and spiritual unity". There are many 'rainbows' who want to convert the rest to a single monism. There are some who will not forswear violence. Some see an apocalyptic future, and some who think we are on the verge of utopia. Awaiting your call. #
