    From AGR ...Karin Zirk

Word from the scouts this morning is that all the sites under consideration
at this point are in western Wyoming. Spring Council will happen within 50
miles of Pinedale, Wyoming and exact directions to Spring Council will be
available at the end of the week. If you're flying, Salt Lake City is the
    airport.

I thought the rainbow family gathering was always held in a National Park...

    Correct you are.

P.S. Don't drop acid, eat it. If you drop it you might not find it...

To my knowlege the Gathering is NEVER at a nat'l park. It's always on Nat'l forest land, but it's also never anywhere pristine. A certain level of infrastructure (roads mostly) are needed to move thousands of people in and out. This many people leave a real impact on the land (though much is done to minimize this).

They most certainly are not!! The National Park Service is an agency of the Department of the Interior, the United States Forest Service is an agency of the Department of Agriculture. The two agencies have entirely different land use policies. National Parks, eg Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, are "Living Museums", National Forests are "Lands of Many Uses", including timber farming, hunting, and Gatherings. I think Park Service Police are under Homeland Security, and I'm fairly certain USFuSs Law Enforcement & Investigation is not. It would be impossible to get away with doing a Gathering on Park Service land. The only land management agency managing land that might be suitable for a Gathering is DoI's Bureau of Land Management, but I doubt there's a site on BLM land with adequate water for a large gathering.

In Utah, sometimes local/regional gatherings are held on BLM land. We are lucky to have so much of it here. The permit process is easy and cheap (and, incidentally, usually unnecessary). I know that when I camp alone or with my family, I almost always use BLM land. I just refuse to pay money to sleep on the ground. Nat'l For. campgrounds always feel too much like KOA.

I'm more excited than a squirrel in a walnut packaging factory. Pinedale is closer than I could have imagined. I hope to see you all there!
    Love you family!
