I read that flipping your dread roots will weaken them... but what do they mean by flipping? Just wanted to know what "flipping" dreads means. If it means to flip them back or just move them around then I'm in big trouble, lol.

Im not 100% sure at the moment, but I think they mean pulling your dread through the same dreads root. Some people do that for some reason, mainly same people who wax...so I dunno, clueless people "making dreads"?

I wouldn't do that, I know people who do it and with some it works out well, but others just get very thin more like braids..

yeah, it is when you flip your dread under the loose part of the hair at the root and pull it back through.

yeah.....don't do it!!! it makes the dread weak. I have heard of entire dreads just breaking off because they were root flipped...

i've actually suffered the consequences of flipping, my buddy (that put my dreads in, and quite nicely done) suggested we do it to tighten at the roots, causing a few roots to have a "loop" in them. It's like to small dreads that quickley grow into a larger one... most have recovered from clockwise rubbing, however some of the thicker ones are having trouble, any suggestions?

    leave em be

i have donre something simular but not exactly
id flip a few from close to the ends a few times but never tight never close to the root just was an attempt to get strands to stay togrther and begin to dread
i think if u do it like 3-6 times in a 6 inch onr longer strand so its loose and all it will encourage the drewads to start but to do it to tighten roots is just dumb

    roots dont need toghtening
they dread on theyree own and will and should have loose hair for up to sn inch
if u try tightening thast bhy flipping u will only do harm

oh, lately i've been kind of worried about some of my loose roots and been wondering if i should do some serious circular rubbing sessions. mainly because my logical thinking tells me that if they're too loose at the roots for too long, the dreaded parts will be kinda floppy and loose too. i've always been wondering if i should just let them be or do some clockwise rubbing...i've mainly just let them be so far and it's going to be a year in like 10 days or so (i remember finding this forum from google a day after i got my dreads and asking some wax questions...and thankfully the people here, with soaringeagle in front, guided me on the right path).

basically im wondering if anything can go wrong if just let the roots be...like can they 'grow out'? what i mean is can they stop growing into dreads?

i would leave your roots alone. they will lock up, many of mine have already. they started out really loose but have been tightening and even though my hair has grown, theyre now locked pretty close to my scalp. actually, the ones with the tightest roots are the ones that have been completely left alone and are almost naturals. i would be careful with root rubbing... just seems to me like it would be damaging and might weaken your roots. but ive never done it so i can really say.

Im pretty sure doing that makes the part of the dread flip up undreadable and you just have a very obvious loopy knot in it that doesnt look right in the middle of your dread once it grows. Might be thinking of something else, but either way, roots lock up with time so it's best just to let them do their thing!
