I am very confused when "le" is required and when it is optional. Some sentences from Rosetta Stone Spanish Level 2 follow below. Can someone help me understand why "le" is used in some cases and not in others, and whether it is required or optional in each case? Thanks! (The rule about asking whether you would use "to" in English doesn't seem to work in these cases.)

La mujer le cepilla el pelo al hombre. <<Used for brushing hair.

La mujer peina el pelo al hombre. <<Not used for combing hair.

Alguien le corta el pelo al hombre. <<Used for cutting hair.

Se le va a caer el plato. <<It seems "drop" requires the reflexive "se," but what is "le" doing here?

    Best regards, --Konrad

It doesn't matter wether brushing or combing hair, it is how the verb is used. In the first (brushing) the sentence says "The woman brushes his hair for the man." The "for the man" part is optional, because you said "le" le is, I think it's called, a pronoun. Stands in for "the man". In the second one, the combing, it says "The woman combs the hair for the man" Here, you need "for the man" cause it doesn't specify otherwise.

    Third one same as first.

Not sure about fourth. Will think about it and write later.

    Hello,

Indirect object pronouns are as follows in Spanish:

    me nos
    te vos
    le les

    Examples:

You want to learn Spanish, so you ask me for advice on how to learn it. I give you advice...

Yo: Te recomiendo que le hables al Sr. Cruz si quieres aprender espanol.

    This translates to the following:

To you I reccomend that you talk to Sr. Cruz if you want to learn Spanish.

Whenever someone recieves an action, use a pronoun so that it is understood who is recieving an action.

    Hope I helped :)
