Im bipolar and an insomniac, i have tried countless things to put me to sleep (6mg of xanax, 30mg sonota, 25mg ambien, 2mg lorazepam) and the only thing that actually works is seroquel, but i cant wake up after i take it. Does anyone know of a pill that is strong enough to shot my brain up at night and has a short enough half life for me to be able to wake up 8 hours later?

welbutrin 300-450 a day, and seroquel 100-150 a night (nothing less that 100mg's does anything, i need 150 if im comming down of a stimulant or halucinogen,) and i frequently parachute my seroquel to make it hit me faster cuz i can't stand waiting 2 houurs to fall asleep...

Dude, if your an insomniac, taking meds isnt the way to go. Youre just creating a new problem, do you always want to depend on a pill for sleep? Try quitting your life and moving to the mountains. Live among nature, and I bet your insomnia is gone in a few days. When I quit going to school, I realized that it was what was keeping me awake, not some sleep disorder. Stress causes insomnia. Im sure you've thought about this already, and youll probably disregard my advice, Seroquel makes you fucking insane though.

I LOVE DRUGS!!! but not when theyre legal and prescribed, pls all yall stay away from that shit, depending on prescription drugs destroys u! A good psychiatrist would solve ur problem without drugs, sadly there arent any. Did you try those positive thinking, enlightment sessions. Drugs should be used recreationally, not to dull pain, or make u sleep, or stop depression, or enhance performance, or wake u up, or increase concentration. Trust me im fucked up, ive done heroin, cocaine, everything, but i never took a pill to sleep. I have some fucked up insomnia, i cant sleep, n if im lucky n i get to sleep, i wake after like a couple of hours n cant sleep again. You gotta knw the root of the problem n solve it on ur own, good luck bro.

What should I use to dull my pain if I shouldn't use pills?

what always helped me go 2 sleep is marijuana. I'd smoke at around 10PM, and by 11 or so I was out cold. And I didnt even know I had built a dependancy on MJ to go 2 sleep. When I got locked up, I could not sleep for 5 days because I didnt have some weed before bed; it was horrile. It was the weird feeling of no weed before bed for the first time in years that didnt let me fall asleep.

weed beats any sleeping pills out there, alteast for me.

this is ridiculous to me. have you ever known someone with a serious mental illness, or serious chronic pain? do you think anyone who has a recurring problem that disrupts their life hasn't tried everything they can to fix it, including, most likely, every positive thinking/enlightening method they could find? why shouldn't a chemical problem have a chemical solution? bipolar isn't something that can be healed by talking about it. it's a lifelong physical condition, and it completely merits taking medication to manage. there are plenty of great psychiatrists, but you can't depend on therapy to heal a serious mental disease any more than you can depend on it to heal cancer or AIDS.

my suggestion is to think about trying something other than or in addition to wellbutrin, since it's a stimulant and is usually used in bipolar for depression, not mania.

yea but the mania's the fun part...sure you get in 10x more trouble when your manic but your actually happy throughout the day...the only thing that sux is not sleeping...

He wasnt asking about bipolar medications, he was asking about sleep medications. If you examine the gradual descent into chemical dependence that society has taken in the last few centuries, its actually quite clear that western medicine only covers up problems, rather than fixing them. I agree, bipolarity (word?) is most likely only curable by western medicine, but it was also caused by western medicine/society. My advice was to try removing yourself from your cluttered mind somehow, and see if that helps with sleep. Think about how well you sleep when camping in the woods, when the only sounds around are sounds of life, rather than industrial machines.

yea true that, opiates numb the pain, they dont kill it...benzos mask the anxiety not get rid of it.

the only medicine that really somewhat works is antibiotics, and half the people in america don't even know how to take that...

100-150mg of trazadone will send you into a sleep coma.

Good natural sedatives are passionflower, valerian root, cannabis, then there's Benadryl or another antihistamine WITHOUT a decongestant, herbal teas without caffeine, aromatherapy oils with relaxing properties, and supplements like calcium + vitamin D (why warm milk is recommended before bed), magnesium, and other minerals.

More important are lifestyle factors like waking up at the same time daily, not taking naps, avoiding caffeine after 12:00 p.m., eating right, and taking time to wind down at least one hour prior to bedtime. Exercise helps you achieve a deeper level of sleep, but shouldn't be done within 3 hours of bedtime. Identifying food allergens, which can lead to hyperactivity, anxiety, overstimulation, and other effects, is vital to understanding both your insomnia and bipolar condition. This isn't some hippie, new age shit either--it's well known that allergic triggers cause mental symptoms in most people, so identifying them and eliminating them from your diet can help you maintain a more stable mindset.

I'd do a google search on mania, insomnia, bipolar disorder, and natural supplements for sedation to find out more. There are infinitely many tips I could give, but you're better off getting it from a number of sources and deciding what works for you. Insomnia sucks, but so do the side effects from toxic drugs like Seroquel, Lithium, Risperdal, Elavil, etc etc...Lastly, make sure to talk to your doctor about this problem, as it can really affect the quality of life and health for you as you know. But remember that you don't HAVE to take any prescription sleep aids or meds just because that's what he/she's trying to sell you.
