Everyone caught up watching them ends up smiling and even laughing with pleasure. Each of us needs to lure them into our lives, whatever it takes. They love agastache, hollyhock, delphinium, foxglove, coral bells, lupine, crocosmia, bee balm, geraniums, and sage.
I've Always Been Fond Of Hummingbirds, As Was My Grandmother. They're Great To Watch, I Keep Feeders Up To Bring Them Around. = )
They are fun. We have them year round here, and they've grown so used to people that if you choose to wear red out in the garden be prepared to be dive bombed and buzzed. In the evening we watch them practice their aerial acrobatics around the feeder.
Humming birds are cool. There is a hummingbird nest about four feet from my front door, on my porch. Two babies in it (super cute), about two weeks old. They also like tree tobacco (Nicotiana glauca) and trumpet vines (Campsis radicans?).
They have songs ? wow, I like them and have watched them for hours on end and I have never heard a sound except the buzzing of the wings.
Hummers RULE! We have the red throated ones here. I have several feeders and bee balm around the house. They'll come within' a foot or 2 of me to feed. Amazing creatures!
It isn't always easy to spot one that is singing. Once I identified it, I was able to follow the sound. They 'twitter' so very fast, it sounds "scratchy"... Their song involves a single high octave, descending in thirds (and just a tad sharp), it sounds something like: "Scraaaaaatchy -scratchy -scratchy -scratch, Scraaaaaatchy -scratchy -scratchy -scratch..." (at least, the ones I'm familiar with). Hehe. ...The buzzing of their wings almost sounds like a little pig grunting. LOL
