In Amarah, Iraqi security forces were deployed in large numbers on the streets and new checkpoints were erected in the city of some 450,000 people, 200 miles southeast of Baghdad, local police said.
The preparations for the Amarah operation were similar to those that led up to the crackdown that began in late March in Basra and Sadr City.
Sporadic violence continued elsewhere in Iraq on Sunday, with a roadside bomb targeting an Iraqi army patrol in the northern city of Kirkuk, killing a soldier and a civilian walking near the site, said Lt. Col. Khalil al-Zubaie, an army spokesman in the area. Three other soldiers were wounded, he said.
Elsewhere in northern Iraq, gunmen killed a college professor and wounded two of his sons in a drive-by shooting in Mosul, according to a police officer who read the report at the provincial headquarters.
The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information, said Dr. Waleed Saadallah al-Mullah was a science professor at Mosul University.
Gunmen also broke into the home of a displaced Sunni family in Baghdad's mainly Sunni Adil district, killing a retired army officer, his wife and their 19-year-old daughter and wounding their 10-year-old son, police and hospital officials said.
The officials, who declined to be identified because they weren't authorized to release the information, said the family had fled sectarian violence in the mainly Shiite district of Amin last year and the father had been working as a car dealer. They said the motive for the killings was unknown.
BAGHDAD: Iraqi reinforcement troops deployed to the oil-producing southern city of Amarah on Thursday as the military geared up for another crackdown against Shiite militiamen, officials said.
U.S. and Iraqi commanders say many militia chiefs have fled to Amarah and Iran after security operations in Basra and Baghdad's Sadr City district. Amarah is the capital of Maysan province, believed to be the hub of weapons smuggling from the nearby Islamic Republic.
Quick reaction force troops from the Iraqi army's U.S.-trained 1st Division that had been sent to Basra arrived Thursday in Amarah, said Marine Lt. Col. Chris Charleville, deputy team leader with the unit's military transition team.
He said they were awaiting orders from the Ministry of Defense.
A local security official said new checkpoints also have been built on the roads to Basra, Baghdad and a border crossing with Iran.

Hope they can start to take care of themselfs soon....

Why are the troops still there you ask? To flush out the last remaining insurgents with the help of a growing stronger Iraqi force and lastly to keep Iran at bay as they try to destabalize the new democratic government while they keep smuggling weapons into the country to the insurgents that fight for the evil clerics like Al Sadr who has recently fled to Iran but has vowed to start a new war with us. The US says "Bring it On". The cause is just and we should stay the course until the enemy is purged. God bless those young brave men and women that are fighting for the US and god bless America :cheers2:

What you don't seem to understand is... that our very presence in the country is what draws insurgents into the country to begin with. We are the reason for the open hunting season.

Radicals go to Iraq to shoot at our troops just like you round up a few buddies and go deer hunting. It's like a country club, or a paintball range.

We're an occupying force in a land that is largely hostile to us and always will be. History teaches all such forces are overthrown in time.

Ours, is going to be a repeat of Vietnam. And all those who collaborated with us will be killed. This is a MUSLIM country. They don't want yank seed spread around. Its a religious offence for us to even be on their soil.

You can argue politics or whatever, but its Islam that will cut our throat there. People are far more willing to die for their God than any political ideology.

Well, that's kind of calling the kettle black, as we have a similar problem in the US with conservative Christians.

They are the powerbase of the neocons, and without that kind of religious blindness, neither the neocons, their zionist handlers, or the Taliban would have a leg to stand on.

Religion is being played like a cardshark handles his deck. Those who truly control this world use it against the believers to make them dance to whatever tune they want.

It's a time tested technique too. Thousands of years old.

I do not like the way U.S. Army Retired has been flamed in this thread. I disagree with his political views, and disapprove of the War in Iraq, but I think he deserves more respect than he has received here. One should refute someone's arguments without insulting him.

I was flamed, and eventually run out of another web site, by right wing military veterans like U.S. Army Retired. No one deserves to be treated that way, unless he is a bigot, and U.S. Army Retired is not.

U.S. Army Retired, I hope you stay on www.hipforums.com. I respect your service in the military, and your opinions. :)

No, he's not a bigot. He's just got the typical military programming.

And to be deprogrammed, he came to the right place.

You (and I mean "you" plural, not you specifically) cannot change his mind by insulting him. He risked his life for what he thinks is a noble cause. He deserves more respect than he has received in this thread. Saddam Hussein was evil. So are the suicide bombers and death squads.

Yes well. A TRUE patriot has no reservations whatsoever about overthrowing a rotten government.

The people are the ultimate law of the land. NOT the government.

Careful who you align yourself with.

US Army Retired, I am a daughter of a retired soldier and stepdaughter of a retired Vietnam vet. I was pretty much raised in the Army. Ive seen angles of it that alot of people dont get to see...moreso, the human element of the military.
I hate war. But I have support for the troops even though it goes against everything I believe in. I have admiration for those willing to die for a cause. However, this war is turning into a waste of good, strong people, and as much as I hate war, I hate waste. But there is something to be said for people willing to sacrifice, not just their lives, but sacrifice anything. It is the ultimate act of unselfishness.

Have you ever seen the picture of Saddam shaking hands with Donald Rumsfeld during the Iran/Iraq war? We gave him weapons in that deal.

Did you know that Osama was also once a CIA operative, and that we provided him with extensive weapons during the Russian occupation of Afghanistan?

The Shah of Iran was installed by the USA for the sake of access to their oil. Ever hear of SAVAK? It was the Shah's secret police. They were quite cruel to the Iranian people.

Isn't it funny how you like to call the kettle black? Evil indeed.

Who knows it better than us?

These are the SAME people who sent Captain America here overseas to do our dirty work. If you think he served our interest for anything other than a private agenda, you're sorely mistaken.

You have people here that would call your father and stepfather murderers (especially your stepfather). What do you think of that kind of respect?

There's no respect. I'm just saying that I myself have respect for those that are in the military. My stepdad was spit on, called a baby murderer and all that when he came back from Nam. He said he enlisted in '65 because he was duped into believing that was the right thing to do as an American. He now severely distrusts the government because, like I said, he was duped. He didnt sign up to be a part of what Nam turned out to be.

He still carries scars, mentally, physically, and emotionally. He cannot watch certain movies for fear it will bring back memories. He cannot fly because that's what he did there. Its a blessing when he doesnt wake up from a nightmare.
