My 24 year old son and his girlfriend are moving to San Francisco soon. They both sure remind me of old hippies. Very artsy, minimalist with vices. They are planning to move to the Haight Ashbury district. I am planning to throw them a going away bash and am thinking of the "Summer of Love" as the theme. Problem: I want party food but I also would like to follow the theme. We could go with some brown rice but we have only one healthy vegan on the guest list. Everyone else loves to eat the bad stuff. Also, I am open to any other suggestions regarding music, entertainment, other popular thing during 1967. Any suggestions would be so appreciated.
Have it in the park/beach.. throw frisbies, do the Limbo, listen to Ravi Shanker, CCR, Dylan, Airplane, Gratefull Dead, Hendrix, beatles White Alblum. Have a smorgishborg of finger foods..Bread, Cheese, Fruit, wine, pigs inna blanket for meat eaters, and spicy meatballs with rice, a veggie tray with yogurt dip.
I'm an old hippy, we liked junk food. Just have that, it's not what you eat it is what you feel. Get them all big macs. They will love you. Entertainment. turn dogs loose on them that was happining a lot back in 1967. They should love that, just kidding. Do whatever you feel hippies don't care. As long as it is all free don't forget we had no money. Peace
You might want to think that one over. They are annoying and they won't leave you alone unless you buy some of there damn incense. Peace
I was being a smart ass and was kidding. On the other hand, they were very prevalent where hippies were to be found in the very late 60s and early 70s. Also at airports and anywhere else large crowds were to be found. They did feed my starving hippie ass a few times when I was scraping the bottom. It's not too hard to listen to their talk when they are filling an empty belly.
Very true, and I'd rather listen to them than some christian bigot raving about how everyone who isn't a christian is going to "hell"
I would have eaten Christian food just as readily. The Krishnas were the ones reaching out to the Hippies at that time. The Krishnas food would fit the bill as being what many people envision as hippie food. Vegan. I tended to eat what came my way. I leaned toward vegan for a good while but I was prone to binges at McDonalds. After eating strict vegan for awhile, a quarter pounder sure tastes good I'm not bitter towards any religion as long as they aren't actively trying to do me physical harm. What good can come from such bitterness? Release it.
They used to throw feasts that anyone could go to. You just had to listen to them. The food wasn't fancy. Lots of rice. I guess I have you to thank for buying their incense. I don't know if they did that everywhere they were. They were doing it on Maui in the early 70s. I remember in the late 70s they could be found at the entrance to the grounds of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. There, they were selling a book. I was working there at the time. They sold a lot of books to the tourists at the grounds entrance that the tourists would immediately throw away once on the grounds. The Krishnas wern't allowed to do to their routine past the entrance gate. The Krishnas would later retrieve the tossed books and sell them again the next day. I don't know if they did the feasts in St. Louis or what they did with the money from selling the books.
If you had to listen to them what did they have to say ? They would show up at rallies we had and they had nothing to say. They would hang around and chant. They had no feasts here. I don't even no where they lived. Oh well this is not helping the chick with her party. I say give every one junk food and then go out and protest something. If they are lucky the cops will come and hit them with sticks and sic dogs on them. Just like the old days. They will love it late 60s all over again. Peace
They led some meditation type stuff. Other than than I have no recollection of what they said. I was pretty fried turing that time period. Back to the original topic. How about avacado on whole wheat sandwiches and soy burgers cut into finger food along with cheap wine. Decorations with hanging beads and playing sitar music is a must, along with burning incense. When it's time for the party to end, announce it with loud speakers and flashing blue or red lights and mist the air with CS.
Oh maybe that's why they never said much. They were meditating. And I guess your party ideas are better than mine. I just wanted it to be realistic. Strung out hippies on junk food and police dogs. Brings back memories. Peace
The Hare Krsnas are still around, you can see them in Philly all the time, they even have a temple and a vegan restaraunt around here
