Is there any one out there who wishes they were not as smart as they are? not book wise but thinking wise i mean i look at people and they seem so happy and oblivious to whats going on(in the world, gov, outer space), it very hard to describe lol. lets say someone would tell you the complete truth about the government, would you want to know? would you want to know how fucked up this government is? And I over think every thing and my mind is WAY open, but is that a good thing and brings me to ignorance is bliss, not knowing is the best right? not knowing is happiness? If any one knows what im talking about plz just let me know im not alone and crazy lol
just because you think things through, and they potentially disturb you, doesn't mean you can't be happy with they way you are. It's one thing to have understanding of something, and it's another thing entirely to actually care.
i know what you mean. sometimes i try to avoid the news and politics in general because it just makes me angry to see all the horrible things happening in the world. but after a month or so of not getting any new information, i always get curious and come back and start reading again, only to find that things have only gotten worse. it's a vicious cycle.
Who cares about being oblivious to what's going on outside when your not oblivious to INNERSPACE, innerspace = outerspace. The only reason why things are going bad is because your imaging it. It's called your imagination, it ACTUALLY creates.
Prioritising information doesn't mean you're crazy. You learn, eventually, to know things without having to think about them, learning to deal with a cosmos that appears so meaningless the way one learns to walk without thinking about the movement of every single muscle involved in the process. I've found this with music; I've learned to play the guitar pretty well. When I first started playing, it was helpful to watch myself in the mirror while I was doing it, to see what my hands were doing. Now that I've learnt though, trying to play in front of a mirror is far harder than just allowing my hands to move as my learned instincts dictate. In the same way, you do eventually learn to deal with knowing. A godless universe seems horrific when you've been taught that a god was an integral part of its workings and its purpose. But once you look at the universe and apply your own purpose to it, soon the absence of a god or inherent meaning is no obstacle, and you're able to create your own god, imbue it with your own meaning, or just ignore it and get on with your life. I used to wish I wasn't smart. But once I realised that I was stuck with it, and learned to accept that, I found that I was smart enough to deal with the challenges that come with that intelligence.
What does God have to do with this? You can be intelligent and believe in God. Uh yeah... There are times when it seems like it would be easier to be thoughtless and live an unexamined life. It gets to where you wonder what meaning a human being can really have anyway, like maybe there's not such a big chasm between you and the "stupid" people after all. And they seem to run around merrily, but you still can't stop thinking. And I agree with neodude as well, you can keep on thinking and being the exact same way you are now and at the same time you don't have to care. And that makes being "smart" much more pleasant, because it really is a wonderful thing all in itself. It doesn't have to be a you vs. the world situation. Just a you for the world with no strings attached situation.
honestly.. i don't think ignorance is bliss. i think accepting life is the key to happiness. living in a fucked up world, and knowing that the world is a very fucked up place, can make you appreciate the little stuff a lot more. if everything was ideal, maybe it would all be taken for granted.
Well yeah, but it does seem to be the big thing that gets people; they're raised believing in a purpose that they don't need to understand, and most of the dumb people never question that. It's once you start questioning it, and finding out that it's mostly based on faith and guesswork, that intelligent people often become depressed and wish they could somehow put the genie back in the bottle. With age, experience, maturity, whatever, real faith, rather than blind faith or obedience, becomes possible. And like you say, a big part of that is to realise that being smart doesn't necessarily make you that different from the "dumb" folk. I was so arrogant as a teen, I felt like the "dumb" folk never asked these questions that were making me so sad and angry. But I think they do. I think maybe it helps, in a way, that they're not so used to finding every answer they go looking for by their own means, without the help of others; the big, unanswerable questions aren't so different for them as they are to someone who knows a lot. Yeah, few of us could hope to remain ignorant forever. Accepting that there are some things that you can't change, but then focusing on changing the things that you can change, seems to be a pretty fool-proof philosophy.
I find one of the biggest obstacles 'smart' people need to hurdle is that they tend to think that nobody else thinks about things as deeply or as often as they do.
I would be happier if I could live life, instead of thinking about life, I assume. Most who spend life in their head seem to find their own little niche of reality, and it's hard to get out of when they do (which accounts for a good portion of Schizophrenia conditions. It's notable, though, that one can be genetically susceptible to it; another blur to the line between psychology and physiology). To feel lost in reality, in your own life, is horrible agony for the individual. Be smart enough to be happy. Watch out for the Nihilism stage, it's a nice bump in the road I like Blazing and Hoatzin's posts
I agree with that. It amazes me that some people never question society. Like, there are people who would think some of my thoughts to be anti-social. I guess it is a positive way of looking at things, but a little too positive. I wasn't thinking of the smart people not being so different from the dumb people in terms of how we think. I meant in terms of the vastness of the universe and intelligences out there that may be far beyond our own. From that perspective, a monkey is a monkey is a monkey. Probably only humans think of each other as smart and stupid.
Even smart people think dumb things and are wrong. So, I don't think it matters much if these so called "dumb" people are oblivious to certain things. Haten_leet, you said: "would you want to know how fucked up this government is". Is that what you think? Do you think that is true because you are "smart"? Do "dumb" people not think that? Ofcourse some do, but, just for other reasons. So, if "dumb" people are coming to the same conclusions as "smart" people. Smart people are seemingly living in "Bliss" because they believe what they believe (even if they are wrong). At the end of the day, what is the difference, really? I don't know if I am "dumb" or "smart", but, when I read some of the posts by supposedly "smart" people, I actually think they maybe "smart", but they have come to the wrong conclusions, leading them to the wrong answer. I'd never condescend them by calling them "dumb" (maybe I should not treat them as being smart!). In conclusion, let people see the world how they want, and think what they want. Don't judge, as you will be judged.
sweet, i know where that is, atleast you got the beach to go to whenever you feel like i'm in hamilton, pretty lame
I've been wondering if ignorance is bliss myself. the more enlightened I become, the more I realize how terribly unenlightened I am. I wonder if I might have been better off staying a slave to time and society, but I strongly doubt it after reading what I just wrote. so I guess my new-found conclusion is that no, I don't think ignorance is bliss.
because out of ignorance, one indulges in actions? but the understanding of "ignorance" in consideration with the OP, is more along the lines of ignorance of truths that would likely make one's perception of the world more negative (as opposed to buddhism). For instance, if you knew the world was going to end tomorrow, would you not be less happy than someone who had no idea this would occur? Is someone who doesn't know the troubles of the world more blessed than one who does? Near Trenton, right? boooo Well, hey, I bet you don't have to drive an hour out to hit a mall up haha. it's dead here in winter
